A-League: Melbourne City v Sydney FC preview

The pressure is on both Melbourne City and Sydney FC when they clash in the opening game of Matchday 3 on Friday night.

It has been a disastrous start to the new A-League campaign for both sides, with zero points recorded from their opening two games.

They have also been conceding goals for fun and have scored just one between them. The heat is on City coach Rado Vidosic and Sydney counterpart Steve Corica, who both need a result desperately.

Another defeat is unthinkable for either team so the stakes could not be higher at AAMI Park.

City look to respond

It has been a shocking start to the campaign for last season’s minor premiers. A 2-1 home defeat against Western United was bad enough, but a 6-0 thrashing at Adelaide United was humiliating to say the least.

There have been some big changes at City in the off-season and it can be argued that coach Rado Vidosic needs time for his new players to gel.

But it will need to start soon, preferably against Sydney. They have already slipped to 4.50 to win the grand final and the jury remains out for now.

Lead by star striker Jamie MacLaren, City are known for scoring heaps of goals, but they have registered just one, while letting in seven at the other end.

MacLaren will be desperate to open his account for the season and can be backed at 1.72 to score at anytime and 4.00 to grab the first goal of the game.

The way both sides have been leaking goals, Sydney have also conceded five this season, means we could be in for another goal-fest.

Five of the last six meetings between the two sides have also involved three or more goals and over 2.5 goals in Friday’s game can be backed at 1.53.

Sydney need to tighten up

Individual errors have cost Sydney FC badly so far this season and have contributed to a 2-0 home loss against Melbourne Victory and a 3-0 defeat at Brisbane Roar.

They need to cut out the mistakes, and how under-pressure coach Steve Corica would love a clean sheet in Melbourne.

Sydney keeping a clean sheet can be backed at 5.50.

The two sides did meet in the Australia Cup in September with Sydney triumphing 2-1 in Melbourne and the same scoreline once again is available at 12.00.

In four of the last five meetings there has been nothing to separate the two sides, with no more than one goal in it.

Sydney would be delighted for anyone to score their first goal of the season, but new signing Fabio Gomes getting off the mark would be a bonus.

The striker can be backed at 1.72 to score at anytime.
