A-League: Melbourne Victory v Wellington Phoenix preview

A top-of-the-ladder clash between Melbourne Victory and Wellington Phoenix at AAMI Park will get Matchday 4 underway on Friday night.

Victory and Phoenix sit second and third on the ladder respectively, but are level on seven points with both Adelaide United and Macarthur FC.

It has been a strong start to the season by both sides and they will be out to keep the good times rolling under the floodlights in Melbourne.

Victory can be backed at 7.50 to go on and win the A-League grand final, while the Nix are available at 15.00.

It is very early days of course, but getting off to a strong start is crucial and there can be no real complaints from either side so far.

Plenty of goals could be on the cards on Friday night, let’s take a look at the match-up between the two in-form teams.

Victory need to be more ruthless

Victory have shown a great deal of grit and determination already this season, and that bodes well for the rest of the campaign.

Tony Popovic’s men had to play much of the game against Adelaide United at the weekend with 10 men, but still managed to battle out a 1-1 draw.

Even being a man down, they still looked a threat, and on another night could have taken all three points.

They were wasteful in front of goal, particularly in the first half, and they will need to be more clinical if they are to win silverware this season.

But they do have Bruno Fornaroli, who cannot stop scoring, and grabbed his sixth goal of the season against Adelaide.

Fornaroli will be a huge threat once again and can be backed at 2.20 to score at anytime during Friday night’s game.

Victory have a great record against Wellington, winning the last three games. Two of them were at AAMI Park and both ended 3-1.

The same scoreline on this occasion is available at 13.00.

Victory will be missing central defender Roderick Miranda following his sending off at the weekend, but Popovic has enough strength in depth to cover his absence.

Zawada back with a bang

Wellington Phoenix will be on a high after thrashing Brisbane Roar 5-2 at the weekend and will be out to pull off a shock in Melbourne.

Star striker Oskar Zawada had failed to score in the opening two games of the season, but he made up for it with a hat-trick against Roar.

Now he is up and running for the season, the Polish ace is sure to be a threat on Friday night and is priced at 7.00 to grab the first goal of the game.

The games between these two sides are usually high-scoring, with only one game from the last six seeing less than three goals scored.

With that in mind over 2.5 goals in the game can be backed at 1.60.

Wellington have won two games out of the last six against Victory, but both have been on home soil, so they need to cure their travel sickness to get a result.
