What is the Memsie Stakes?

The Memsie Stakes is a Group 1 race staged at Caulfield Racecourse in late August each year at the start of the Melbourne Spring Carnival and a contest steeped in history.

First held in 1899 it was elevated to Group 1 status by the Australian Pattern Committee for the 2013/14 racing season.

It is run over a distance of 1400m and is a conditions contest with weight-for-age allowances, though its early position in the season means three-year-old contenders are quite rare.

The Memsie Stakes can often act as a good indicator for some major races late in the Spring Carnival, including the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup.
