Australian Racing: Mr Metrics can go the distance

There’s plenty of action for punters to get stuck into on Friday with six meetings set to take place.

Race 7 Lismore

Gobbled @ 6.50

Race 1 Sunshine Coast

Eight Cylinders @ 2.30

Race 5 Goulburn

Mr Metrics @ 5.00

Gobbled to triumph at Lismore

The Casino Rsm Club Beef Week Cup over 1410m is the most valuable race on the Lismore card.

The open handicap is set to take place on a soft 6 track as the penultimate contest on an eight race card.

The Stewart Campbell-trained Macchina Volante is expected to have his supporters following two starts in Cup contests back in March.

Those efforts are his only outings this spell with the most recent of those seeing the six-year-old suffer a near three length defeat when sixth in the 1600m Bairnsdale Cup at Bairnsdale.

That Bairnsdale contest took place on a good 4 track but the son of Hinchinbrook has proven he handles wet tracks in the past including when placed at Port Macquarie in June last year.

Preference here is for GOBBLED however who gets in off a nice racing weight on his first start back from a spell.

The four-year-old ended last year with a head victory in a Benchmark 74 event over 1400m at Coffs Harbour.

The Star Witness gelding resumed this time around with a ninth in the Bushgrove Cup over 1175m at Grafton at the end of last month.

The selection appeared to find the distance too short on that occasion and took a step forward when upped to 1400m to place third in a 1400m Benchmark 66 event at Taree just under three weeks ago.

Gobbled has a good barrier five off the rail and is selected to return to winning ways.

Cylinders for Sunshine success

The opening race on the Sunshine Coast card is an interesting 1000m maiden handicap contest. A soft 5 track is forecast with Deferential expected to prove popular with punters on his first start since clipping heels and returning with lacerations at Doomben in January.

Robert Heathcote’s inmate showed his best form when third at Ipswich in August last year and is overlooked in favour of EIGHT CYLINDERS

The selection is a regular at this venue having made four consecutive starts here including when two-and-a-half-lengths fifth in a maiden plate in January.

The pick raced close to the pace on that occasion and has the benefit of a barrier trial here having won by half-a-length over 850m on a soft 5 track.

While the son of Showcasing has yet to encounter a wet track in an official race he has gone well on soft and heavy ground in barrier trials and is taken to successfully concede weight to his rivals.

Metrics for Goulburn glory

MR METRICS shoulders top weight in the fifth race on the Goulburn card but looks capable of successfully conceding weight to his rivals in the Benchmark 58 handicap.

The 1400m event is set to take place on a good 4 surface with the pick having registered his first victory this spell when successful over this trip at Albury third up.

That effort marked the selections first over this distance since resuming while it’s notable that he boasts a strong record on good going having won both previous starts on a sound surface.

The second of those came by three-and-a-half-lengths in a Benchmark 62 event at Murray Bridge back in March last year.

While Mitchell Beer’s charge regularly raced from the front in the past he has been ridden with more restraint this spell.

With that in mind barrier nine should prove no issue and he is taken to deliver a victory on his first start at this venue.
