Fight for Underwood success

The 1800m Group 1 Underwood Stakes has attracted a classy field with last year's winner Alligator Blood expected to jump as favourite for the race.

The seven-year-old triumphed over this distance on the Hillside course at Sandown on that occasion but he has run well here in the past including when fourth in the Memsie Stakes.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott, the gelding followed up that Memsie fourth with a good second-place finish in the 1600m Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington a week ago.

While the experienced campaigner appears to be building towards a win, preference here is for WITHOUT A FIGHT who failed to shine in last year's Melbourne Cup but has shown up well since.

Formerly trained in the UK but now in the care of Anthony & Sam Freedman, the gelding is unbeaten in two starts since that Cup disappointment.

The most recent of those saw the gelding charge home to salute by two lengths in the 2200m Group 2 The Q22 at Eagle Farm in June.

Prior to that the pick had triumphed over 1800m in the Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup at the same venue and it’s notable that he has gone well first up in the past.

Mark Zahra, on board for both of those Queensland triumphs is again in the saddle and, while this looks tougher, his mount looks capable of registering his first top level success.

Nadal to serve up Rose shock

A field of 13 are set to go to post for the 1400m Group 1 Golden Rose at Rosehill.

The Group 2 Run To The Rose held over 1200m at this venue a fortnight ago rates a key form race for this, with the first eight home all in the field.

The eight are headed by the winner that day Cylinder who finished well to get home by a head over front-running Moravia and hold-up performer NADAL.

Cylinder is expected to prove popular with punters here, having performed well at Group 1 level as a juvenile last season when runner-up in the Golden Slipper over 1200m.

The winner that day Shinzo is also in the field here, with Ryan Moore aboard Chris Waller’s colt, who is set to make his first start since that Slipper success.

While both Cylinder and Shinzo have top class form to their name, preference at big odds is for the Run To The Rose third Nadal.

The colt was making just his fourth career start when finishing less than half-a-length behind Cylinder having missed the break on that occasion.

The pick finished strongly when let down on that occasion and shaped as if he would show improved form stepping up in distance.

Trained by Ciaron Maher & David Eustace, a wide barrier shouldn’t pose too many issues given the colt’s racing style and he is selected to salute at big odds.

Zougotcha to take Pendant

The Group 2 Golden Pendant over 1400m is set to take place as the sixth race on the card at Rosehill.

ZOUGOTCHA has shown plenty of promise in her two starts this spell including when beaten just over two lengths in the Group 2 Sheraco Stakes over 1200m here earlier this month.

The four-year-old had Espiona ahead of her on that occasion but she has performed well over further in the past, including when third in a Group 1 over this trip earlier in the year.

The booking of Ryan Moore for Chris Waller’s mare is a positive here and the daughter of Zoustar is taken to record her sixth win in 12 career starts.
