Nathan Lyon: Career stats, Test, ODI, T20I appearances, Ashes record

Off-spinner Nathan Lyon has enjoyed a simply amazing career for Australia since being spotted when working as a member of the ground staff at the Adelaide Oval.

He took a wicket with his first delivery in Test cricket, dismissing the great Kumar Sangakkara in Galle in September 2011, went on to play 100 consecutive Test matches and has become one of only nine bowlers to pass the 500-wicket mark.

In terms of Aussies, only Glenn McGrath (563) and Shane Warne (708) lie ahead of him in the all-time list, while he is the second most successful off-spinner in the history of Test cricket behind Muttiah Muralidaran (800).

Lyon has played a very limited role in white-ball cricket for the Baggy Greens and has not featured in either 50 or 20-over international cricket since July 2019.

Perfect start leads to stellar career

Lyon could not have got off to a better start in Test cricket, as his first ball bowled accounted for Sri Lankan all-time great Sangakkara and he went on to claim 5-34 as the hosts were dismissed for 105 in their first innings in Galle.

He has taken five wickets in an innings on a further 24 occasions, while he has also completed five ten-wicket match hauls and lies 6th on the list for both the most balls bowled and the most runs conceded in a Test career.

His five ten-wicket hauls put him equal 12th on the all-time list, with fellow spinners Clarrie Grimmett (7) and Warne (10), as well as legendary pace ace Dennis Lillee (7), the only Aussies higher up on the rankings.

Lyon has racked up 129 Test appearances to date and his key role alongside the usual battery of Aussie pacemen has allowed the Baggy Greens to go into Tests confident that they can pick a four-man attack and still enjoy plenty of success.

The now 36-year-old played in exactly 100 consecutive Test matches before suffering a serious calf injury in the Ashes series in England in 2023, becoming only the third Aussie to do so, with only Mark Waugh (107) and Allan Border (153) ahead of him.

India and New Zealand suffer the most

Lyon completed his first ten-wicket haul against India at the Adelaide Oval in December 2014, when he took a then career-best innings figures of 7-152 in India’s second innings, having claimed 5-134 in the first.

He has improved on those innings figures three times since then, with both of his eight-wicket returns also coming against India and his current outstanding figures are the 8-50 taken against India in Bengaluru in March 2017.

An 11-wicket haul was completed against India in Indore in March 2023, while his best-ever match figures are the 13-154 he claimed against Bangladesh in September 2017.

New Zealand have twice been the victims of ten-wicket match hauls by Lyon, which came in consecutive appearances against the Black Caps, albeit in matches more than four years apart.

The most recent was the 10-108 he took in Wellington earlier this year, in a match which the tourists won by 172 runs before going on to seal a 2-0 series victory at Christchurch.

Ashes century mark passed

Lyon has played in no fewer than 30 Ashes Tests against England to date and has been a consistent wicket-taker, picking up 20 or more in two consecutive series.

He has never taken ten wickets in a match against the oldest enemy in the international game, while he has snared five wickets in an innings on just two occasions.

His best innings figures came in England’s second knock at Edgbaston, Birmingham, in August 2019, with Lyon taking 6-49 as the hosts were skittled for 146 to lose the match by a massive margin of 251 runs.

Lyon has taken 110 Ashes wickets in total, which leaves him seventh on the all-time list for Australia, a list which is headed by the late, legendary Warne on 195 - a record mark for a bowler on either side.
