A-League: Newcastle Jets v Western Sydney Wanderers preview

There is just one game to wrap Matchday 3 on Sunday afternoon when Newcastle Jets entertain Western Sydney Wanderers at McDonald Jones Stadium.

The Jets will be out to try and pick up their first victory of the new A-League season and hope that home advantage will help to get them over the line.

Western Sydney have started the season well with four points from their opening two games, and this is the kind of match they need to be winning if they are to challenge for the title.

The Wanderers are priced at 6.00 to win the minor premiership in 2023/24, and even though it is early days, they look to have the bit between their teeth.

Let’s take a look at the match-up between the two sides with Sunday’s game fast approaching.

Jets need to take off with a win

The Jets have just one point to show for their efforts so far this season after being involved in two high-scoring games.

They rescued a point at the death in a 2-2 draw away at Perth Glory in the opening game of the season, before being on the wrong end of an eight-goal thriller against Melbourne Victory last week.

But now they are back on home soil for the first time this season and will be looking to make it count.

If they are to get anything from the game against Western Sydney, they will need to tighten up at the back. Conceding seven goals over two games is far from ideal.

The last two meetings between the two sides have not been high-scoring affairs however.

Last season they fought out a 1-1 draw in this same fixture, while Western Sydney won the reverse fixture 2-0 at CommBank Stadium.

Under 2.5 goals in Sunday’s game can be backed at 2.25.

Clayton Taylor helped himself to a brace against Melbourne Victory last weekend and he is priced at 3.60 to score at anytime in the game.

Newcastle are priced at 3.75 to finish bottom of the A-League this season but if they can cause an upset against the Wanderers it could spur them on to greater things.

Wanderers out to down Jets

Western Sydney got the season off to a disappointing start with a 0-0 draw at home to Wellington Phoenix, but they made up for it the week after.

The Wanderers took their frustration out on Western United when hammering them 5-0 at CommBank Stadium.

The manner of the win showed what Mark Rudan’s side are capable of and now they need to back it up against the Jets.

They have a solid record against Newcastle, losing just once in the last six meetings, but four of those games have been at home.

In their last two trips to McDonald Jones Stadium, they have drawn 1-1 and lost 1-0, so need to do better on Sunday.

Lachlan Brook got the Wanderers off to a great start against Western United when firing home a brace in the opening 13 minutes.

Brook can be backed at 3.00 to score at anytime on Sunday.
