Aussie Rules: No room for Pies complacency

Collingwood should consolidate their place at the top of the AFL ladder on Sunday when they take on Greater Western Sydney at the MCG.

The Pies have slipped to just the one defeat so far this season and as things stand they look like being the team to beat in 2023.

However, there is still a long way to go and there can be no room for complacency when they entertain a side like GWS.

The Giants have won three and lost five so far this season, but they have yet to be played off the park, and Collingwood will have to be at their best to get the job done.

Being the last game of the round, both teams will know exactly where four points will take them, and with the ladder being so tight, it could be a long way.

Moore a big worry for Pies

Collingwood are on a hot run of form after winning the last four games on the bounce and the home support will be expecting another four points on Sunday.

However, there has not been a great deal between the two teams in those four games.

The Pies edged out St Kilda by six points, Essendon by 13 and Adelaide by just one. The 77-48 win over Sydney was a bit more convincing.

Greater Western Sydney’s losses this season have also been close affairs, so we could be in for another tight one at the MCG.

Collingwood to win by 1-12 points can be backed at 8.00.

The MCG has been a fortress for Collingwood so far this season, with their only defeat coming away from home against the Brisbane Lions.

The Pies have a side full of quality and defender Nick Daicos has been one of the star performers, averaging 34 disposals a game so far this season.

He is priced at 1.87 to notch over 30.5 on Sunday.

There is one big concern for Collingwood as skipper Darcy Moore could be forced to sit out the game through injury.

Moore is nursing an elbow infection and the Pies will make a late call on his inclusion. Collingwood are definitely without ruckman Billy Frampton.

Greene blow for Giants

Greater Western Sydney’s chances of pulling off an upset have been hit by the news that influential skipper Toby Greene will be missing with an ankle injury.

Greene missed the round-eight defeat against Western Bulldogs with the injury, and after failing a fitness test on Friday, the Giants have opted to leave him out.

Considering Greene has booted 20 goals this season, he will be sorely missed. GWS will also be without Isaac Cumming through injury, so debutante Cam Fleeton gets his chance.

The Giants may have lost five games this season, but in fairness there has not been much in them.

The Bulldogs won by 15 points last week and high-flying Brisbane ran out 108-87 winners in round six, which is hardly a mauling.

GWS have also shown they can hang in their until the death and get the job done when beating Sydney 107-106 at the SCG in round seven.

In the same fixture in 2022 GWS lost by just 11 points in another tight game at the MCG. They also won the two games before that, one of them being in Melbourne.
