Australian Racing: Northam showpiece can go to Comfort Me

There are nine meetings set to take place this Sunday with the Group 3 Northam Stakes at Northam the sole Group race on the schedule.

Race 7 Northam

Comfort Me @ 5.00

Race 7 Rockhampton

Emerald Kingdom @ 6.50

Race 3 Bendigo

Boominartie @ 2.60

Comfort well-set for Northam success

Red Can Man looks likely to jump as favourite for the previously mentioned 1300m Group 3 Northam Stakes.

A good 4 track is expected for the race at Northam, with the Steve Wolfe-trained gelding having shown good form in his three starts this spell.

All three of those efforts have come at Ascot, including when one-and-a-half-lengths second in the Group 3 Roma Cup over 1100m at the start of the month.

The gelding acquitted himself well when beaten just one-and-a-half-lengths into sixth in The Tabtouch Quokka at Ascot subsequently.

This looks an easier contest, however COMFORT ME is preferred on this occasion.

The son of Playing God finished behind Red Can Man when the pair clashed in the Group 3 Roma Cup however that was the Rhys Radford-trained geldings first run back this spell.

The pick performed well at the top level when runner-up in the 1600m Group 1 Railway Stakes at Ascot in November last year and placed second over 1200m in The Tabtouch Joey last start.

The extra 100m that Peter Knuckey’s mount tackles here is a positive and with a good alley in five he is taken to register an eighth career success.

Kingdom to rule at Rockhampton

Rockhampton plays host to the $775,000 Bentleys 2023 The Archer with the 1300m event having attracted 17 declarations.

Startantes is expected to prove popular with punters having delivered a Group 1 victory in the Sky Racing Tattersall’s Tiara over 1400m at Eagle Farm as a three-year-old.

While unable to score in four subsequent start she resumed with a promising four-and-a-half-length eighth over 1000m in the Ascot handicap at Eagle Farm just over two weeks ago.

That is expected to have put her spot on for this contest with a wide barrier the biggest concern for Robert Heathcote’s hold up performer.

Fourth in the Ascot Handicap, beaten just over four lengths was EMERALD KINGDOM, who is the pick to deliver a victory in this valuable contest.

Trained by Desleigh Foster, the selection was making his first start since finishing tenth in a valuable 1425m contest at Gold Coast back in January.

He has shown good form on soft tracks in the past, including when winning the 1350m Magic Millions The Buffering on a soft 5 surface at Doomben at the end of December.

Damien Thornton’s mount boasts an impressive five wins from seven starts when racing second up and jumping from barrier three is selected to return to winning ways.

Boominartie can shone at Bendigo

The third at Bendigo is an interesting 1300m maiden contest.

A soft 5 surface is forecast with BOOMINARTIE taken to deliver a victory on his return to action for the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace team.

The pick showed plenty of ability when fourth over 1217m on a good 4 track on debut at Moe back in November.

The son of Flying Artie proved a slight disappointed when beaten over four lengths into eighth in a 1400m contest at Sandown Hillside the following month.

Given a break since that effort, he tackles and easier contest here and jumping from barrier eight the selection looks up to returning with a victory, having been gelded since that Sandown Hillside effort.
