From 2007 until 2021 the race was known as the Kingston Town Classic, until it switched to the Northerly Stakes in 2022.

It was a Principal Race until being handed Group 1 status in 1979.

Amelia’s Jewel won the 2022 Northerly Stakes for jockey Patrick Carbery and trainer Simon A Miller.

Some true champions have won the Northerly Stakes down the years, including Vo Rogue in 1988 and Better Loosen Up in 1989.

Better Loosen up completed the Northerly Stakes/Railway Stakes double that year, a feat also achieved by Old Comrade (2001), Modem (2004), Sniper's Bullet (2009).
