AFL: Nothing to separate Saints and Giants

St Kilda and Greater Western Sydney had to fight hard to book their place in the top eight, but for one of them the premiership dream will end at the MCG.

There was nothing to separate the two sides during the regular season. Both were 13-10 for the campaign and only a slightly better percentage saw St Kilda finish in sixth.

It is very fitting that these two sides go up against each other and it is almost impossible to pick who will go through to the next stage.

There was nothing in it when the two sides met earlier in the season and this game has all the ingredients to be the closest, most exciting game of week one.

St Kilda hoping for home comforts

St Kilda got the 2023 AFL season off to a flyer and although they have slipped down the ladder since then, they will be delighted to have made finals.

Their position in the top eight looked in jeopardy at one point after suffering some disappointing defeats, but they bounced back to win three of the last five games of the season.

They saw off Geelong and Richmond and then gave Brisbane Lions a run for their money in the final game of the regular season before losing by 12 points.

St Kilda do have the edge over GWS when winning each of the last three games against them.

All three wins were also in Sydney, including the 12-point victory in round 10 this season.

It look sure to be another close one in finals and both sides are priced at 5.50 to win by 1-12 points.

It is tough to pick a winner, and the difference could turn out to be home advantage, with St Kilda set to be backed by a large vocal support at the MCG.

Defence will again be key for Ross Lyon’s side and attempting to nullify GWS forward Toby Greene.

With that in mind, both Jack Sinclair and Callum Wilkie will be crucial for St Kilda,

Sinclair is averaging 29 disposals a game this season and can be backed at 2.15 to produce 30+ against GWS.

Giants standing tall

GWS were flying towards the end of the regular season and although they slipped to a couple of defeats against Port Adelaide and Sydney, they will be pleased with their form.

The 32-point win over Carlton in the last game of the regular season should give them a massive confidence boost, while they also beat Essendon in the game before.

Toby Greene is also hitting form at just the right time and is the kind of player who will thrive on games like this.

The forward has booted 60 goals this season and four of those came in the win over Carlton at the weekend.

Greene is sure to be a huge threat once again and can be backed at 8.00 to boot the first goal of the game against St Kilda.
