NRL: Dolphins out to build on Roosters shock

All eyes will be on the Dolphins on Saturday to see if they can build on the shock win over the Sydney Roosters by beating the Canberra Raiders in Redcliffe.

The NRL new boys will be keen to show their debut win over the Roosters was no fluke by beating the Raiders in front of what is sure to be a packed Kayo Stadium in Redcliffe.

The Roosters themselves are also in action and need to bounce back from that loss when their pride will have taken a huge beating. They face a Warriors side that started their campaign with a crucial win.

To wrap up the action on Saturday the Melbourne Storm will be looking to make it two wins from two when they face a Bulldogs side that were not at the races in week one. It is still very early days but each match is huge as depending on how you start it can set the tone for the rest of the season.

So let’s take a closer look at Saturday’s action.

What:Sydney Roosters v New Zealand Warriors
Where:Allianz Stadium, Sydney
When:15:00 (AEST) Saturday 11th March 2023
How to watch:Kayo, Foxtel
Odds:Roosters 1.22, Warriors 4.20

The Roosters have suffered a big blow as they attempt to bounce back from the Dolphins loss. Victor Radley suffered a head knock in that loss and has been ruled out of the game. Matt Lodge also suffered a facial fracture against the Dolphins and has since undergone surgery.

Fletcher Baker comes in to replace him. There is better news concerning Brandon Smith though after he passed his HIA last week following a head knock and is free to play. There is also a massive boost for the Roosters as Joey Manu returns from a facial fracture that he suffered in pre-season and is set to start.

The Warriors will be on a high after starting their season with a win over Newcastle in week one. Coach Andrew Webster has named an unchanged 17 for the trip to Sydney and will be hoping to put more pressure on the Roosters.

What:Dolphins v Canberra Raiders
Where:Kayo Stadium, Redcliffe
When:17:30 (AEST) Saturday 11th March 2023
How to watch:Kayo, Foxtel
Odds:Dolphins 2.40, Raiders 1.58

The season could not have got off to a better start for the Dolphins. Now the pressure is on to show it was no fluke as expectations have risen all of a sudden. Dolphins coach Wayne Bennett makes just one change to his 17 and that has been forced on to him after Ray Stone picked up a knee injury.

Stone was immense against the Roosters and will be missed, but it presents Mason Teague with the opportunity to make his debut off the bench. Anthony Milford has to settle for a place among the reserves once again. The Raiders almost pulled off a comeback win against the Cowboys last week, but after fighting back from 18-0 down to level matters, lost 19-18.

Canberra are also forced into a change as Jordan Rapana has been hit with a three-match suspension so Albert Hopoate will come in and play on the wing. Josh Papali’i remains on the sidelines with a calf injury.

What:Melbourne Storm v Canterbury Bulldogs
Where:AAMI Park, Melbourne
When:19:35 (AEST) Saturday 11th March 2023
How to watch:Kayo, Foxtel
Odds:Storm 1.36, Bulldogs 3.20

The Melbourne Storm suggested there will be life after the loss of Brandon Smith and co by beating the Parramatta Eels on their own patch in the opening game of the NRL season. However they will have to build on the win without the services of the influential Cameron Munster who suffered a finger injury against the Eels and misses out.

It means that Tyran Wishart will now try and fill his boots by playing at five-eighth. Aaron Pene has been named on the bench. Xavier Coates suffered a shoulder injury last week but has been named to play.

The Bulldogs suffered a poor week one loss against Manly when high-profile recruits Viliame Kikau and Reed Mahoney failed to inspire them to a win. However new coach Cameron Ciraldo is keeping his cool and has named the same 17 in the hope they will offer some kind of response at AAMI Park.
