Background and profile

Born in Townsville, Queensland, Holmes took to rugby at junior level with the Western Lions, before being snapped up by the Sharks at the age of 17.

Playing through the Queensland youth teams while working his way through the ranks at the Sharks, Holmes made his NRL debut against the Parramatta Eels in 2014.

A versatile player who can feature in various positions in the backline, Holmes’ talent was easy to see, even in his early days in the NRL.

Helping the Sharks win the 2016 grand final was the highlight of his career to date, as they beat Melbourne Storm 14-12 in the showpiece event.

Holmes made the switch to the Cowboys back in 2020 and has made over 70 appearances for North Queensland since.

International career

With a father from New Zealand and a mother from the Cook Islands, there was plenty of interest in Holmes’ ability when it came to international rugby league.

In September 2014 he was named in both the Junior Kangaroos training squad and the New Zealand Kiwis training squad, before pleading his allegiance to the country of his birth.

Holmes has enjoyed great success with Australia, helping the Kanagroos to win the 2017 and 2021 World Cups.

He has an outstanding tryscoring record for Australia, scoring 20 tries in 21 appearances for his country.

What to expect

A superb athlete with pace and dynamism to beat defenders, the 28-year-old will be an important figure for the Cowboys once again this season.

The Cowboys are one of the outsiders for the title this season at 19.00 and if they are to cause a shock and win the NRL crown, expect Holmes to have played an important role.
