NRL: Sea Eagles target win number three

Manly Sea Eagles will be out to make it three wins out of three when they take on South Sydney Rabbitohs on Saturday night.

There are just the two games to look forward to on Saturday and as well as the Sea Eagles versus the Rabbitohs, the Cowboys also entertain the Titans in another big game.

After the troublesome end to 2022 it has been a great start by Manly, who are now coached by Anthony Seibold, but they face another big test against the Bunnies.

It has not been the greatest start by Souths, who have lost their last two games, but they will be keen to bounce back with a win at Accor Stadium.

Earlier in the night it is the turn of the Cowboys versus the Titans and so far in 2023 the ladder positions have been reversed.

The Gold Coast are up in sixth place after winning two from three, while the Cowboys have dropped way down the ladder after winning just one game so far.

It is a big day for all four teams so let’s take a close look at each game with kick-off fast approaching.

Queensland derby set to be hot

The Cowboys were one of the surprise packages of 2022 when finishing third on the ladder but it is a different story so far this season.

After opening the season with a one-point win over Canberra they have slipped to back-to-back defeats against the Broncos and Warriors. There is no need to panic just yet but Todd Payten’s side need to get on a run sooner rather than later and Saturday would be a good place to start.

Broncos target third win on the bounce

The Cowboys have been hit by the news that Reuben Cotter is facing up to four weeks on the sidelines with a knee injury so Griffin Neame comes in to replace him.

James Tamou makes his return and will take a place on the bench, but the influential Scott Drinkwater is out through suspension.

It means Tom Chester will continue at fullback. The Titans will be on a high still after beating Melbourne Storm 38-34 last week to add to the opening week win over Wests Tigers. Justin Holbrook’s men only picked up six wins in 2022 and have two already this season.

They will fancy their chances of getting another in Townsville. Saying that they will have to break with tradition to do that. The Titans have won just one of the last 10 games against the Cowboys on their own patch.

It is no surprise to see that Holbrook will stick with the same 17 that beat the Storm last week. Sam Verrills is out injured so Chris Randall will continue to play at hooker.

Bunnies need to bounce back

The season started so well for the Rabbitohs after they beat Cronulla Sharks in round one but they have since gone on to lose the next two.

In fairness they have been against the two hot fancies to win the Premiership, Penrith Panthers and Sydney Roosters, and had things gone their way they could have won both. Jason Demetriou and his players can take plenty of heart from their performances.

Now they face another stiff challenge in the form of a Manly side that are completely different from last year and are playing with confidence.

Home wins over the Bulldogs and Eels have them flying high, but they will face their biggest test yet when they travel away from home for the first time this season.

The Rabbitohs are doing it tough on the injury front as Hame Sele will miss out with concussion after failing his HIA, while Shaquai Mitchell is ruled out with a foot injury and Tevita Tatola with a MCL issue.

As for the Sea Eagles, they will be missing Lachlan Croker with a shoulder injury so Karl Lawton will come in to replace him. One of the highlights of the night will be the match-up between two of the best fullbacks in the game, Manly’s Tom Trbojevic and Souths star Latrell Mitchell.

It could also go a long way to deciding who wins the game. Get ready for an exciting one.
