Oakleigh Plate: Date, how to watch, past winners & more

The Oakleigh Plate is a Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race that takes place at Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne, in February.

Raced over a distance of 1100m, The Oakleigh Plate is one of Victoria’s most famous sprint races, and always attracts a strong field of speedsters.

The race is sandwiched in between two more major sprint races in the Melbourne Autumn carnival, the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes and Group 1 Newmarket Handicap.

The Oakleigh Plate which is an open handicap, is also on the same card as the Blue Diamond Stakes and Futurity Stakes, making for a bumper day of action at Caulfield.

The Oakleigh Plate takes place in late February and the 2024 edition will be held on Saturday 24th February.

The Oakleigh plate is steeped in history and was first raced way back in 1884, when it was won by a horse named Malua.

That same year, Malua also went on to win the Newmarket Handicap.

There is a total prize pot of $750,000 for the Oakleigh Plate Lightning, with the winner taking home $450,000.

Second wins $135,000 and third $67,000. Sixth, seventh and eighth all pick up $15,000 for their efforts.

Uncommon James won the 2023 Oakleigh Plate for trainers Steve O’Dea and Matthew Hoysted and jockey Ben Thompson.

There have been some famous winners of the Oakleigh Plate in recent years. Most notably Lankan Rupee in 2014, Weekend Hussler in 2008 and Fastnet Rock in 2005.

Lankan Rupee and Weekend Hussler also went on to complete the Oakleigh Plate/Newmarket Handicap double.
