The race takes place in between two more major sprint races at the Melbourne Autumn carnival, the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes and the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap.

The Oakleigh Plate is an open handicap and is on the same card as the Blue Diamond Stakes and Futurity Stakes, which makes for a bumper day of action at Caulfield.
