Race 7 Belmont Park

Dennis Choux @ 5.50

Passion ready for Sandown success

The sixth race on the card at Sandown Hillside is a competitive looking 1400m Benchmark 64 handicap set to take place on a good 4 surface.

Shakattak is expected to have his supporters having won already this spell when taking out a 1200m Benchmark 64 handicap at Cranbourne on his penultimate start.

The gelding finished strongly to win by a narrow margin on that occasion and he can be forgiven for a below-par effort over this trip in a Benchmark 70 event at Geelong subsequently.

Ben Melham takes the ride here, with the four-year-old having been ridden by Celine Gaudray in both previous starts and the pair are set to jump from next to the rail.

While Shakattak rates highly here, MISS PASSION is preferred racing off a nice racing weight, having broken her maiden at Bendigo when returning from over a year off the track in November.

The selection came home over a length clear of her four rivals in an 1100m maiden held on a good 4 track that day, with that win not unexpected by punters given she jumped at short odds.

The 4.60 pick has delivered third-place finishes in both subsequent starts, including over 1200m when third in a seven runner Benchmark 64 handicap at Moonee Valley on her penultimate start.

A third-place finish when beaten just under three-and-a-half-lengths in a 1400m Benchmark 70 event at Geelong earlier this month followed and she has a good barrier in four here.

Trained by Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman the $760,000 yearling purchase is taken to deliver her second career win.

Zattastar to shine at Doomben

There are four last start winners in the penultimate race on Doomben’s seven race card, a 1650m Benchmark 62 handicap contest.

Serenade The Cat is one of those last time out winners and she is expected to feature towards the head of the market having won at Murwillumbah on 27th December.

The daughter of Poet’s Voice fought bravely to deliver a near two-length victory when contesting a 1550m Benchmark 58 handicap held on a soft 6 track on that occasion.

The extra distance here should prove no issue, with the seven-year-old mare having won over further in the past and she heads here having been scratched from a race at Ipswich last week.

However, ZATTASTAR is selected here having won twice already this spell, including at Ipswich when taking out a 1350m Benchmark 55 handicap on a good 3 track in November.

Quick ground isn’t a necessity for the pick, however, with the mare having shown good form on wet tracks in two subsequent starts, including when third on a soft 6 at Lismore earlier this month.

The 10.00 mare was beaten two lengths in that Lismore contest and shaped as if she is worth a try over this distance when finishing well on that occasion.

Trainer Jack Bruce has saddled a couple of winners in the last week, including at Eagle Farm on Saturday and his representative is taken to deliver a victory from barrier two.

Choux goes for Belmont glory

The finale at Belmont Park looks a competitive 1400m handicap contest, with the New Zealand-bred gelding DENNIS CHOUX taking the eye.

The 5.50 selection made the perfect start to his time with trainer David Harrison when delivering a victory in a 1000m Class 1 contest at Pinjarra Scarpside on 13th December.

The gelding raced on a good 4 track that day and encountered similar underfoot conditions when following up in a Class 3 event at Ascot just over two weeks later.

Jockey Paul Harvey, set to ride here, was on board for both of those victories, however the pick had an apprentice up when third over this track and trip at Class 3 level when last in action on 10th January.

The son of Jimmy Choux is a versatile type tactics-wise and, with options from an inside alley, he is selected to return to winning ways.
