Australian Racing: Pericles poised for Orr Stakes success

There is plenty of racing action on Saturday, with Caulfield set to stage the Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes among the contests on their ten-race card.

Race 9 Caulfield

Pericles @ 7.50

Race 6 Randwick

Tom Kitten @ 6.00

Race 7 Morphettville

Second To Nun @ 3.00

Orr Stakes success awaits Pericles

The 1400m feature Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes comes up as the penultimate race on a ten-race card at Caulfield and is set to take place on a good 4 track.

Mr Brightside is expected to jump as favourite, having shown good form earlier this season, with his efforts including a track and trip Group 1 win in the Memsie Stakes in September.

The six-year-old followed up in the Makybe Diva Stakes over 1600m at Flemington prior to registering a trio of Group 1 seconds, including in the Kennedy Champions Mile back at Flemington in November.

The Ben, JD & Will Hayes-trained gelding has been given a break since that effort and, while he could finish only fifth in this race last year, that did come at Sandown Hillside.

Preference at bigger odds here, however, is for PERICLES, who placed at the top level over 2000m in the Rosehill Guineas at Rosehill in March last year.

Since then the gelding has won twice, including in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes on a soft 5 track at Randwick at the start of September.

Trained by James Cummings the 7.50 selection has since placed in both the Silver Eagle at Randwick and the 1500m Golden Eagle when beaten a head into second at Rosehill in early November.

Mark Zahra’s mount prepped for this with a victory in a 1000m barrier trial at Warwick Farm on 30th January and he is selected to deliver his first win at the highest level.

Tom to return with a win

The 1200m Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes is the sole Group race on a Randwick card that includes the value Inglis Millennium for juveniles.

The feature sprint for three-year-olds comes up as the sixth race of the day, with a field seven set to go to post.

Bjorn Baker saddles Caballus, with the colt heading into this contest on the back of a victory by over a length in an 1100m Benchmark 72 handicap at Rosehill last month.

He had Joseph Parr up on that occasion and, while he is again in the saddle here, the pair look opposable, with TOM KITTEN selected to score dropping back markedly in distance.

The son of Harry Angel showed good form at two with his efforts including a fourth in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes over 1600m at this venue in April last year.

James Cummings’ colt returned with a narrow margin success when finishing strongly in the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes over 1300m at Rosehill when making his seasonal debut in August.

The 6.00 selection has since gone on to prove himself a quality performer over further, including when delivering an impressive victory in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes over 2000m at Randwick.

Adam Hyeronimus, on board for that Spring Champion success is again set to ride here and his mount is taken to resume with a win.

Road to deliver at Morphettville

The seventh race at Morphettville is the Listed JRA Plate over 2000m.

A good 4 surface is expected, with SECOND TO NUN arriving here in good form having saluted in each of her last four starts.

That run of wins started when delivering a six-length victory in a 1600m Class 2 handicap at Murray Bridge at the start of last month.

The 3.00 four-year-old found the step up in distance no issue when making all the running in the 2050m Strathalbyn Cup, a handicap contest held at Strathalbyn when last in action on 2nd February.

Regular pilot Rochelle Milnes is again in the saddle here and she looks capable of steering her mount to a fifth consecutive victory when stepping up to Listed company for the first time.
