AFL: Pick of the week one action

The 2024 AFL campaign is set to get underway this week, with four matches taking place over three days.

Just eight of the 18 AFL teams will be in action, before a full program takes place the following week.

However, you could not pick four better games to get the season started, with a majority of the premiership contenders in action.

Let’s take a closer look at the opening four games of the season.

Sydney v Melbourne

The clash between the two premiership hopefuls is the curtain raiser for the 2024 AFL campaign and should not disappoint.

Sydney squeezed into finals in 2023 before falling at the first hurdle, but will be looking to go deeper in the campaign ahead.

Melbourne finished fourth only to crash out of finals in straight sets, and they will be out to make amends.

There is nothing to separate the two sides, but home advantage could make the difference, with the Swans priced at 1.75 to win, while the Demons can be backed at 2.10.

Brisbane v Carlton

Brisbane will be keen to get over the disappointment of last season’s grand final defeat quickly, while Carlton are desperate to end their premiership drought.

Both sides will be in the mix for grand final glory in 2024 and this round one clash presents an opportunity for one of them to put down an early marker.

The Lions are usually solid on their home patch at the Gabba and are the hot fancies at 1.33 to begin with a win.

However, Carlton are capable of upsetting the odds and are 3.35 to leave with the points.

Gold Coast v Richmond

Neither the Gold Coast nor Richmond will be in the hunt to win the grand final this season, indeed a place in the top eight is the best they can hope for.

However, the round one clash is intriguing to say the very least as former Tigers coach Damien Hardwick is now in charge of the Suns.

Hardwick won three premierships with Richmond before resigning midway through last season, citing he needed a break from the game.

The break was a short one and he is now in charge of a Suns side that will be looking to beat the Tigers on Saturday afternoon.

They are the hot fancies at 1.47 to do just that, while the Tigers can be backed at 2.70 to upset their former coach in his first game.

Greater Western Sydney v Collingwood

Reigning premiers Collingwood have been handed a tough assignment as they begin their title defence on Saturday.

The match is a repeat of the 2023 Preliminary final, which Collingwood won by just one point, before going on to win the grand final.

Greater Western Sydney are expected to be in the mix for the premiership once again and they will be keen to start 2024 on the front foot.

Revenge over the Pies would be a great way to start, and they can be backed at 1.78 to begin with a win.

All eyes will be on Collingwood to see how they begin their premiership defence, and they are priced at 2.05 to pick up maximum points.
