Aussie Rules: Pies look to pile more misery on Blues

Collingwood will be out to inflict more pain on their old rivals Carlton when the two sides clash at the MCG on Saturday.

The Pies are flying high at the top of the ladder, but the same cannot be said for the Blues, who have won just one game in the last five.

Carlton sit ninth on the ladder and although there is time to turn things around, they need to do so quickly if they are to rescue their season and play finals.

There will of course be no sympathy from a Collingwood side that have lost just the one game this season and will be out to extend their lead at the top of the ladder.

Despite the differing fortunes of the two sides, the intense rivalry adds another dimension and Carlton will be looking to tap into that for some inspiration.

The last two meetings between the two sides have been very close and you cannot rule out another tight one here.

Blues in need of a lift

Carlton started the season positively when winning three of the opening four games, while the other was an opening-round draw against Richmond.

However, they have been on the slide ever since and one win in the last five has seen them slip out of the eight.

The only win in that sequence came against a West Coast side that have won just one game all season, so they cannot take too much heart out of that.

The big concern for the Blues is the fact they have lost the last three games on their own patch at Marvel Stadium.

The Bulldogs beat them by 20 points, Brisbane by 26 and St Kilda by 22. The clash with the Pies switches to the MCG, where they have fared better when beating Geelong by eight points in round two.

Whether it makes a difference against Collingwood, only time will tell.

The two sides met on two occasions in 2022, with both games being played at the MCG, and both were very close. Collingwood won by just one point in August and then by four points in May.

Collingwood can be backed at 6.00 to win by 1-12 points, with Carlton also the same price.

A bigger winning margin of 13-24 points for Collingwood is also available at 5.50.

At least Carlton do have Charlie Curnow, who has booted 33 goals so far this season, and he can be backed at 6.50 to score the first on Saturday.

Hot Pies look to march on

Collingwood are bang in form and have recovered well after losing their only game against Brisbane. They have gone on to win the next five, but again there have been some close encounters in there.

The Pies beat Adelaide by just one point, Essendon by 13 and St Kilda by six. It is a good sign that they can find a way to win in tough games, but could give Carlton a little hope.

They were way more convincing in the last game though as they smashed GWS by 65 points.

Nick Daicos continues to shine when averaging 34.8 disposals a game and can be backed at 5.00 to win best on ground against Carlton.

As things stand both Collingwood and Carlton have not made any changes to the squads that played in their last games.
