Aussie Rules: Pies must avoid Eagles banana skin

It is bottom versus top in Perth on Saturday evening as the struggling West Coast Eagles entertain ladder-leaders Collingwood at Optus Stadium.

11 games have been played so far in the 2023 AFL campaign and a massive 36 points separate these two sides, who contested the grand final back in 2018.

The Eagles won on that occasion but it has been a slippery slope since then and they now find themselves at the bottom of the ladder.

Collingwood on the other hand are flying high and will be hoping this is the year they end their premiership drought.

They are priced at 3.25 to do just that, but there is still a long way to go and the competition will of course be fierce.

For now they will just be focused on the next game and avoiding a banana skin in the west.

West Coast are having another season to forget after winning just one game from 11 so far this season to sit bottom of the ladder on four points.

Add that to the two wins they picked up in the 2022 campaign and it is easy to see why the Eagles faithful are reaching for the panic button.

It is fair to say that coach Adam Simpson has been hit with some cruel luck on the injury front, but they are still well below where they want to be.

West Coast’s only win so far this season came back in round two when they beat Greater Western Sydney at Optus, but it has been all downhill from there.

The Eagles hit new depths when they suffered a humiliating 116-point defeat against Hawthorn in round nine, but there were some encouraging signs in the defeat against Essendon last week.

That too was at Optus with the Bombers running out 96-46 winners. That was just the third time this season that the opposition has failed to score at least 100 points against them.

It is clear that West Coast have problems, but they will be hoping to find their best form and give the Pies a game.

Despite only winning two games last season, one of them was against the Pies at the MCG, and that may give the Eagles hope as it shows shocks do happen.

The Eagles also have Oscar Allen, who has booted 29 goals this season and can be backed at 1.07 to score at anytime on Saturday.

Pies look to stay on a roll

While West Coast are struggling, the same cannot be said of Collingwood, who have won 10 games out of 11 so far.

Their one blip did come on the road at Brisbane Lions, but there has been no stopping them since. There have been one or two close encounters, but Collingwood find a way of getting the job done when the going gets tough.

They beat North Melbourne by 35 points in the last game and will be expecting to do something similar to West Coast at Optus.

Collingwood can be backed at 7.00 to win by 25-36 points. If the Eagles are to cause an upset, it is sure to be tight and they are priced at 26.00 to win by 1-12.
