Aussie Rules: Pies out to consolidate top spot

The top three on the ladder are all in action on Sunday as Port Adelaide and Brisbane attempt to keep the pressure on leaders Collingwood.

Collingwood are four points clear at the top, but it is very tight just below them, with Brisbane and Port Adelaide both on 32 points.

The Pies really should consolidate top spot as they entertain North Melbourne, but Port Adelaide and Brisbane have trickier assignments.

Port travel to take on Richmond, who have been struggling but could respond to the surprise departure of premiership coach Damien Hardwick this week.

Brisbane Lions are also away from home, this time against Adelaide, who have made a solid start to the season and have aspirations of playing finals.

It looks like both Port and the Lions will have to win to keep within four points of Collingwood, unless North Melbourne pull off a shock at the MCG.

Richmond have been on a poor run of form having won just two of the last five games, to sit 14th on the ladder, nowhere near where they want to be.

It has resulted in premiership coach Damien Hardwick stepping away from the job as he believes that the players need to hear a fresh voice.

It will now be interesting to see how a tough week will effect the Tigers, who need a win to keep their faint top-eight hopes alive.

Funnily enough, Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley is one of the hot fancies to take the Richmond job for the start of next season when he will be off-contract.

The Power sit in third spot on the ladder and have won the last five games on the bounce. They have picked up some big wins in Melbourne already this season so have been travelling well.

Jeremy Finlayson has been their biggest goal threat so far this season with 16, and he is priced at 8.00 to boot the first of the games on Sunday.

Collingwood will take some stopping

Collingwood are on fire this season having won nine of their 10 games and they are priced at 3.80 to go on and win the premiership in 2023.

On current form they will take some stopping. Brisbane are the only team to beat them this season and that was at the Gabba back in round four.

The Pies are unbeaten on home soil and it would be a huge boilover if the Kangaroos were to beat them at Marvel Stadium.

North won their first two games of the season but have since lost eight on the bounce. They do however have Nick Larkey, who has booted 25 goals this season, and the key forward is priced at 1.28 to score at anytime on Sunday.

Result hard to call at Adelaide Oval

Adelaide versus Brisbane is expected to be a tight game that could go either way. The Crows have lost their way a bit over the last month when winning just two of the last five games.

However they are a formidable outfit at the Adelaide Oval. They recently beat St Kilda 121-69 and although they lost to Collingwood, there was only one point in it.

That highlights the challenges that face the Lions on Sunday. Both of Brisbane’s defeats have been on the road, and one of them was at the Adelaide Oval in round one when they were hammered 126-72 by Port Adelaide.

The other was against the Bulldogs in round three but they have gone on to win the next seven on the bounce and are flying high.
