Premier League: Postecoglou waiting on Kane position

The 2023/24 English Premier League season is set to get underway and Tottenham, under the leadership of Ange Postecoglou, will be aiming high.

With Postecoglou in charge of one of the bigger clubs in the league, the pressure will be on him and his team to perform.

The likes of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte have been and gone at Spurs and now the club’s chairman Daniel Levy has placed his faith in former Celtic chief Postecoglou.

With the big kick-off fast approaching, let’s see how Postecoglou and Spurs are shaping up.

Kane future remains in doubt

Postecoglou has had to deal with doubts over the future of star striker Harry Kane ever since he walked through the door, and the situation is still up in the air.

Kane is priced at 8.00 to be the Premier League’s leading goalscorer in the 2023/24 season, but it remains to be seen if he will be at the club.

There is the possibility he may not even be in the country with German giants Bayern Munich chasing his signature.

The Bavarians have failed with two bids so far as Postecoglou and Spurs fight hard to keep hold of the England captain, but their resolve will be tested further.

It looks as though Bayern have made a third and final bid and the future of Kane should be sorted, one way or the other, soon.

It goes without saying that Tottenham’s season will hinge on whether Kane stays or goes. Replacing his goals if he does leave, is an almost impossible task.

But, as things stand, Tottenham are priced at 4.33 to finish in the top four and for that to happen they will probably need Kane to still be on board.

Maddison arrival brings quality

While much of the talk in pre-season has centred on Kane. Spurs have been busy bringing in new players and Postecoglou has strengthened well.

The big signing has been the capture of England international midfielder James Maddison, who arrives from relegated Leicester City.

Despite the Foxes' relegation last season, Maddison has been outstanding in the Premier League and will add quality and guile to the Spurs midfield.

Plenty has also been spent on former loanee Dejan Kulusevski from Juventus. The 23-year-old plays on the wing and adds much to the Lilywhites' attack.

Postecoglou has also splashed the cash to bolster his defence with the addition of Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon, another who impressed on loan with Spurs last season.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has also signed from Italian side Empoli, while midfielder Manor Solomon arrives on a free transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk.

There is still some time to go before the transfer window closes and there is a good chance that Postecoglou will strengthen further before then.

Pre-season far from complete

It is hard to read too much into Tottenham’s pre-season form as they have not played too many games.

There are games against Shakhtar Donetsk and Barcelona to come and Postecoglou will know a lot more about his side after those two games.

A clash with Leicester City was postponed, while Spurs slipped to a 3-2 defeat against West Ham in Perth in July.

The latest friendly clash saw Tottenham hammer Lion City Sailors 5-1, with Richarlison the star of the show as he completed a hat-trick.

The Brazilian striker can be backed at 5.00 to be Spurs' leading goalscorer in the Premier League season ahead.
