Aussie Rules: Power look to go clear

Port Adelaide get the chance to move four points clear at the top of the AFL ladder when they entertain Geelong on Thursday night.

The Power are locked on 44 points with Collingwood at the top, after the Pies suffered a narrow defeat against Melbourne in the King’s Birthday clash on Monday.

Collingwood have a bye in week 14, meaning Port Adelaide can open up a gap with a win over the Cats at the Adelaide Oval.

Geelong will not make it easy though as they are battling to force their way into the top eight and are in need of the points. It is a massive game for both sides and there is no better way to get the round underway.

Port doing it for Hinkley

There is no stopping Port Adelaide at the moment and many believe the Power are playing their best ever footy while under the leadership of Ken Hinkley.

Port had a tough assignment in week 13 as they travelled to take on a Western Bulldogs side that sit inside the top eight.

It turned out to be a real battle that went to the final quarter, but it was Hinkley’s men that finished the stronger to win by 22 points.

The win, and the manner of it, again proved that Port Adelaide have what it takes to go all the way in 2023.

After a tough 2022 that saw Hinkley put under severe pressure, it appears that the players are determined to shine for their leader and win him the flag.

Port Adelaide are a united group and if they remain that way then they could take some stopping this season.

They have lost just the one game on home soil this season and that was at the start of the campaign in the derby clash against the Adelaide Crows.

Since then they have been unstoppable. Charlie Dixon was one of the stars of the show in the win over the Bulldogs when booting four goals in the game and he is priced at 1.11 to score at Anytime on Thursday night.

Danger back for Geelong

Geelong are in need of a big lift to give their premiership defence some spark, and they hope to get it against Port with some key names returning.

Skipper Patrick Dangerfield has been missing for the past four games with a hamstring injury but looks set to make his return at the Adelaide Oval.

Not only that, but Geelong also hope to have Mitch Duncan and Max Holmes back available for the trip to South Australia.

Both trained with the main group over the weekend and if they come through another session on Tuesday then that should be the green light to face the Power.

It has been a tough season for the Cats, who are attempting to defend their 2022 flag, and they sit 6-6 for the season.

They can take heart from their win over the Bulldogs before the bye, and should be well rested after sitting out the action last weekend.

The Cats need to somehow fight their way into the top four to boost their chances of going back-to-back.

However, they are eight points away and there is plenty of work to be done. There is still time though and Geelong are priced at 9.50 to win the flag.
