Premier League: Spurs face tricky Toon test

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur have their top-four destiny in their own hands as they prepare to make the trip to St James’ Park to face Newcastle United on Saturday.

Aston Villa squandering a two-goal lead against Brentford last time out to draw 3-3 has played into Spurs’ hands but there is still plenty of Premier League football to be played.

The next challenge for Postecoglou’s side is a tough trip to the north east, with Eddie Howe’s Newcastle battling to secure European football of their own.

Spurs finding their rhythm

It’s the business end of the season and Tottenham have started to pick up points at the best possible time.

With just one defeat in their last six Premier League games, Spurs have made up ground and leapfrogged fellow top-four contenders Aston Villa on the ladder.

While the two teams sit on 60 points going into the weekend’s games, Spurs have a game in hand over the Villans and are three goals better off in terms of goal difference.

The Lilywhites will take confidence into their trip north on the back of a 4-1 win over the Magpies the last time these sides met in December.

Revenge might also be a motivator for many of this Spurs squad, who suffered a 6-1 defeat on their last trip to St James’ Park in April last year.

That was before Postecoglou’s tenure and the Australian tactician has brought about significant improvements in this Tottenham side since his arrival last summer from Celtic.

Spurs are 2.30 to come away from Newcastle with the vital three points, while a draw on Saturday night is also available at 4.00.

Heung-Min Son scored in the 4-1 win against the Magpies earlier this season and the South Korean star is 2.30 to score anytime at St James’ Park.

Magpies on the up

Newcastle have also found form at this important stage of the season, with two wins and a draw in their last three outings.

Boss Howe will know his side need to improve their home form if they are to land a spot in the Europa League for next season.

Newcastle have managed just two wins in their last seven games at St James’ Park and they could certainly do with another three points this weekend.

The hosts are 2.70 to land the three points against Spurs, while in-form Swedish striker Alexander Isak is 2.30 to score anytime in this one.

Games between these sides have tended to be high-scoring affairs, with 12 goals scored in just the last two meetings.

Over 4.5 goals to come in for a third consecutive game in this fixture is available at 3.00.
