Premier League: What we learned from Tottenham's opening PL fixture

A 1-1 draw at newly-promoted Leicester City on Tuesday morning will have come as a reality check for Tottenham Hotspur in their Premier League opener.

While reigning champions Manchester City went to Stamford Bridge and earned a 2-0 win over Chelsea, Spurs already find themselves playing catch-up after dropping two points at the King Power Stadium.

Pedro Porro opened the scoring to give Spurs the first-half lead in the East Midlands, before veteran Foxes striker Jamie Vardy bagged the equaliser.

It was a frustrating night for Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou and here are a few things we have learned from that opening game.

Solanke under the spotlight

Having a couple of good chances in a dominant first half by Spurs, big summer signing Dominic Solanke failed to have the goalscoring debut he would have been dreaming of.

Two efforts on goal from Solanke failed to trouble Leicester goalkeeper Mads Hermansen, as the Lilywhites couldn’t make the most of their chances.

With AU$125.5m spent to bring Solanke to north London from Bournemouth, there is always going to be high expectations on the former Liverpool striker.

Solanke will be disappointed not to have opened his goalscoring account on Tuesday but he will continue to put himself in positions to score and it will only be a matter of time before he gets that maiden goal for his new club.

Postecoglou rues missed chances

A downbeat figure after the full-time whistle, Postecoglou admitted his disappointment his side could not put the game to bed when they were so dominant in the first half.

Spurs even squandered a chance to win it at the death when Brazilian forward Richarlison failed to show composure with a header from close range.

A frustrated Postecoglou will be looking for more from his frontmen in the final third when Spurs play host to Everton on Saturday.

Spurs are 1.44 for the win, while the Toffees are 7.00 to come away from north London with a valuable three points. A draw in the capital is available at 5.00.

The future is bright

Spurs played two 18-year-olds last night, with Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall coming on in the second-half at the King Power Stadium.

While Bergvall gave away a chance for Leicester late on, he almost provided the winners for Spurs but his free-kick was headed wide in the dying moments by Richarlison.

There is plenty of excitement about what Gray can do at Tottenham this season but Postecoglou will be mindful of easing the English starlet into life in the Premier League following his summer move from Leeds United.

With talented youngsters in the squad, there are certainly good things to come at Spurs but for Postecoglou it’s all about the here and now.

Saturday provides a good opportunity to bag a first win of the season against strugglers Everton but more dropped points would start to see pressure mount on the Australian in north London.
