Big Bash preview: Melbourne Stars v Hobart Hurricanes

Melbourne Stars may have seen their top-four dreams disappear by the time they take on the Hobart Hurricanes on Monday and they will be hoping that Adelaide Strikers slip up.

The Stars blew a great opportunity to claim fourth spot with one game remaining, when losing to the Melbourne Renegades in Saturday’s derby clash.

The Strikers can secure fourth spot with a win over the Sydney Thunder on Sunday and are priced at 1.72 to win the match.

If they slip up, then the opportunity will be there for the Stars to snatch fourth by beating the Hurricanes at the MCG.

The Stars are 2.62 to make the top four, with the Strikers priced at 1.44.

All eyes will be on Manuka Oval on Sunday to see how the Strikers go on, but let’s take a look ahead to the Stars versus the Hurricanes on Monday.

Stars suffer huge setback

It was a night to forget for the Melbourne Stars at Marvel Stadium as the Renegades picked up a comfortable six-wicket win.

After winning the toss and deciding to bowl, the Renegades reduced the Stars to 137/8 off their 20 overs and then knocked them off with 16 deliveries to spare.

The defeat was a huge hammer blow for the Stars, and in the end their failure to put on a big total with the bat cost them big time.

So often the hero, Glenn Maxwell made just 20, while fellow big gun Marcus Stoinis was dismissed for two.

Beau Webster, who has had a good BBL 13 made 29, but it was left to Hilton Cartwright lower down the order to give the Stars some hope.

He top-scored with 38 runs and is priced at 11.00 to be Team - Top Batter against the Hurricanes.

The Stars then failed to do damage with the ball as the Renegades reached the target with relative ease.

Nathan Coulter-Nile was the pick of the bowlers when taking 2-25 off his four overs He is 4.00 to be Team - Top Bowler.

Hurricanes aim to finish on a high

The Canes have had a BBL 13 to forget and any chance of making finals disappeared after losing their last three games on the spin.

However, they have pride to play for and will be keen to end with a win over the Stars.

They suffered an eight-wicket defeat against the Strikers in the last game when making 167-6 off their 20 Overs.

However, the Strikers lost just two wickets as they made their target in less than 16 overs.

Mac Wright top-scored for the Canes with 37 and can be backed at 5.50 to be Team - Top Batter, while Ben McDermott is available at 4.00.
