NRL Profile: Melbourne Storm

Melbourne Storm are expected to be in the hunt for the NRL premiership in 2024 but will need to raise their game to stop Penrith Panthers.

The Storm have disappointed by their extremely high standards over the last couple of seasons, and they will be keen to bounce back in the season ahead.

They have one of the best coaches in the NRL in Craig Bellamy, and some of the best players to go with it.

Now it all has to come together for them to win their first premiership since 2020. They can be backed at 11.00 to break the short drought.

Storm fall short in 2023

Melbourne Storm managed to finish third on the NRL ladder in the 2023 season, however they never really looked like winning the premiership.

Penrith Panthers and Brisbane Broncos were the top two sides in the competition and went on to contest the grand final.

The Storm finished five points behind the top two at the end of the regular season and were outplayed by them both in finals.

Brisbane smashed them 26-0 in the opening week of finals, but they made the most of their second chance when just edging out the Sydney Roosters 18-13 in the semi-final.

That set up a preliminary final showdown against Penrith, but they were outclassed once again, this time losing 38-4.

The two defeats in finals showed the gulf in class between the teams and the Storm will have to make big improvements to close the gap in 2024.

Key players

Melbourne Storm have an outstanding roster with some of the best players in the NRL pulling on the purple jersey.

However it would seem they have been hurt by the loss of some experienced heads such as the Bromwich brothers and Dale Finucane.

The long-term injury situation with gun fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen has also hurt them, and he will again be missing for much of 2024.

However the Storm as still blessed to have one of the best playmakers in the NRL in the form of Queensland superstar Cameron Munster.

Munster has been at the top of his game and forms a great partnership in the halves with Jahrome Hughes.

Hooker Harry Grant is also one of the best, while Xavier Coates and Will Warbrick are excellent on the wings.

Nick Meaney, Justin Olam and Christian Welch will also be among the players to look out for in 2024.

New signings

For Melbourne Storm it has been all about securing their star players to new long-term contracts and most of that work was done earlier in the year.

The big one was tying Cameron Munster to a new deal with a number of clubs looking to lure him away, while Will Warbrick also penned a three-year extension.

With the likes of Nick Meaney, Nelson Asofa-Solomona and Eli Katoa also locked in, the Storm will be happy to go with what they have got in 2024.

Opening fixture

Melbourne Storm begin the 2024 NRL season with a mouthwatering clash against the hot fancies for the premiership, Penrith Panthers.

Even though nothing is won in the first game of the season, a victory would give the Storm a huge confidence boost for the rest of the campaign.

They can be backed at 2.25 to get the win with the Panthers available at 1.65.
