Australian Racing: Profound pay-off expected at Randwick

There are five meetings set to take place on Wednesday, with Randwick Kensington and Sandown Lakeside among the four metro meetings.

Race 4 Randwick Kensington

Profound Benefit @ 5.00

Race 6 Sandown Lakeside

Vinnie's Spirit @ 2.60

Race 7 Ascot

Fashion Stakes @ 2.90

Benefit to break his maiden

The $100,000 Ranvet Handicap is the most valuable race of the day, with the 1250m maiden handicap event restricted to three-year-olds set to take place as the fourth race of the day at Randwick Kensington.

The Peter & Paul Snowden team are set to saddle Xidaki, who is expected to prove popular with punters having placed on all three previous starts.

Those starts included a good third when beaten less than half-a-length in a 1200m maiden held on a soft 6 track on the main course here on 26th December.

The gelding followed that effort up with a solid half-length second under his jockey here Kerrin McEvoy when racing over the same trip on a good 4 surface at Newcastle earlier this month.

The son of Zoustar has a wide alley to overcome here and, with that in mind, PROFOUND BENEFIT is preferred for Chris Waller.

The selection showed little in two starts in September finishing eighth of nine on each occasion, including when beaten over nine lengths over 1200m at Rosehill.

The 5.00 gelding was spelled following that effort and he demonstrated a marked improvement in form when beaten less than a length over this trip at Canterbury when racing first up this spell.

While the pick raced on a soft 5 track that day, he should prove up to handing the quicker going expected here while the booking of top hoop James McDonald takes the eye.

An inside barrier is a further positive with regard to the Deep Field gelding’s chances and he looks up to registering his first victory.

Spirit set for Sandown success

The sixth race on the Sandown Lakeside card is a seven-runner 1600m Benchmark 70 handicap contest.

A good 4 track is expected, with The Devil In Her set to start favourite for the in-form Patrick Payne stable.

The filly showed plenty of ability in 2023, winning twice from four starts including on the Hillside course when contesting a 1600m Benchmark 64 fillies handicap in July.

The four-year-old raced on a soft 5 track that day and was spelled following a well-held sixth in a handicap over the Cox Plate track and trip at Moonee Valley at the end of that month.

Billy Egan’s mount impressed when saluting by over three lengths in a 1500m Benchmark 64 handicap on the Hillside track at this venue first up this time around.

However, preference on this occasion is for VINNIE'S SPIRIT for the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott stable.

The Waterhouse & Bott team can boast an impressive 35% strike-rate (6/17) at this venue in the last 12 months with the gelding their only runner on the card here.

The 2.60 selection has yet to win in five starts this spell however he has placed in four of them including when runner-up over 1400m in a Benchmark 72 handicap at Randwick Kensington on 17th January.

Jordan Childs’ mount is expected to race close to the speed and stepping up in distance is taken to record a win receiving weight from his rivals.

Ascot win is all the Fashion

Ascot’s finale looks to be a decent 1500m Class 3 handicap contest, with Neville Parnham set to send out FASHION STAKES.

The 2.90 selection has made four of her five starts this spell at this venue, including when beaten less than a length into fourth in a 1200m Class 1 handicap here on 20th December.

The four-year-old filly raced close to the speed when returning here eight days later, ultimately proving too good for her four rivals when taking a similar contest over this distance.

Both of those efforts came on a sound surface, however, the soft 5 expected here should prove no issue, with the filly having shown a liking for wet tracks last year, including when breaking her maiden on a soft 7 at Belmont Park.
