Queensland Derby: Date, how to watch, past winners, latest odds and more

The Queensland Derby is a Group 1 thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds which takes place at Eagle Farm Racecourse in Brisbane, in June.

The Queensland Derby is raced over a distance of 2400m at set weights and is part of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.

The race is one of only eight Group 1 races to be held in the state, and with $1million in prize money up for grabs, attracts a stellar field.

It is a race that is steeped in history and one that Queenslanders are extremely proud of.

Queensland Derby date

The Queensland Derby is part of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival and takes place in June each year.

The 2024 edition of the race will be held on Saturday 1st June.

The exact time for the Queensland Derby has yet to be announced, but in 2023 it was Race 7 on the card, and is likely to stay the same in 2024.

It is a bumper card at Eagle Farm with the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup also taking place on the same day.

Queensland Derby venue

The Queensland Derby will take place at Eagle Farm racecourse in Brisbane, but that has not always been the case.

Eagle Farm has undergone a number of renovations in recent years, and in 2015, 2017 and 2018, the Queensland Derby took place at nearby Doomben racecourse.

Queensland Derby history

The Queensland Derby has a long and proud history, and was first raced way back in 1868. On that day it was won by a horse by the name of Hermit.

Gayndah racecourse held the first edition of the Queensland Derby, before it moved to Eagle Farm in 1871.

The total prize fund for the Queensland Derby stands at a cool $1million.

First place takes home $600,000, second $180,000 and third place $90,000.

The top 10 all pick up prize money, with $12,000 going to the horses that finish sixth through to 10th.

Queensland Derby past winners

Kovalica won the 2023 edition of the Queensland Derby for champion trainer Chris Waller and jockey James McDonald.

Some of the best horses Australia have ever produced have won the Queensland Derby over the years.

These include Tulloch, who took the honours in 1957 and Kingston Town, who won the 1980 edition.

Queensland Derby odds

Autumn Angel is the hot fancy at 3.25 to win the 2024 edition of the Queensland Derby.

Tannhauser can be backed at 4.50, while Warmonger is also available at 6.50.
