Australian Racing: Skylight to be on Song at Wyong

There are five meetings set to take place on Thursday, including provincial meetings from Wyong, Toowoomba and Townsville.

Race 2 Wyong

Skylight Song @ 2.60

Race 3 Pakenham

King Neptune @ 3.50

Race 4 Toowoomba

Nicci De Rosa @ 4.80

Song to score at Wyong

Top weight Gulf Of Panama is expected to have his supporters ahead of the second at Wyong. The race in question is a 1350m maiden plate with a soft 7 surface expected.

Trained by Blake Ryan, the four-year-old has placed twice on both previous starts on wet tracks, including when beaten one-and-a-half-lengths over 1300m at Hawkesbury.

Racing second-up on that occasion, the gelding disappointed on his only attempt at this distance when eighth at Beaumont in December 2021.

Absent for over a year following that effort, it's worth forgiving that. However, SKYLIGHT SONG, who is returning to provincial level here, is preferred in this contest.

The son of Your Song is another to have shown a liking for a wet surface in the past, with the gelding having been beaten by a head on a heavy 8 track at Hawkesbury last October.

That Hawkesbury effort came over 1300m and the pick has acquitted himself well on a sound surface since then, placing second twice from three starts on going described as good.

Trained by Mark Newnham, Skylight Song has run well over further in the past and is selected to get off the mark at the seventh time of asking.

King for Pakenham success

The third race on the Pakenham card is an interesting 1400m maiden contest and a field of 11 are scheduled to go to post with a soft 5 surface forecast.

Grey Northern is expected to jump as favourite, dropping markedly in grade following a couple of respectable efforts in Group company in her last spell.

Those efforts include a seventh-place finish in the 2000m Group 2 Wakeful Stakes on a soft 7 surface at Flemington at the end of October.

However, Jamie Mott's mount has failed to make much of an impact in her maiden starts and looks opposable in this event.

Trained by Phillip Stokes, KING NEPTUNE has shown ability in four outings, including when finishing runner-up in two of them.

The second of those second place finishes came when contesting a 1443m maiden on a heavy 8 track at Geelong back in November.

The son of Ocean Park missed the break when jumping as the favourite for that contest and while the form could be working out better, it was a solid effort given the start.

The pick had an unfavourable barrier in 12 when making his return to action over this course and distance last month. The three-year-old raced from off the pace in the early stages as a result but kept on nicely in behind to finish seventh that day.

He is expected to strip fitter for that effort and is selected to break his maiden at the fifth attempt.

Rosa for Toowoomba glory

The fourth race on the Toowoomba card, a 1000m Class 3 handicap has attracted three last-time-out winners.

A good 4 track is forecast for the sprint contest with NICCI DE ROSA, one of those three last-start winners taken to complete a double.

The daughter of Nicconi delivered a one-and-a-half-length triumph in an 800m Class 3 event at Kilcoy when racing first-up this time around on 21st March.

Claimer Alisha Donald, on board on that occasion, is again in the saddle here with the pick having shown a liking for this venue in the past when breaking her maiden here last August.

The step up to 1000m here is no issue having won over further in the past and with a good alley in four, she is selected to deliver a victory for handler Stephen Kirkwood.
