The Randwick Guineas is a Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds that takes place at Randwick Racecourse, Sydney, in March each year.

The Randwick Guineas is part of the Sydney Autumn Carnival and is run at set weights over a distance of 1600m.

$1million in prizemoney is up for grabs, but the winner of the Randwick Guineas also automatically qualifies for the Australian Derby and Doncaster Mile.

It makes the Randwick Guineas one of the premier races of the Sydney Autumn Carnival, which in-turn, attracts a stellar field.

The Randwick Guineas is one of the early races in the Sydney Autumn Carnival and takes place in March each year.

The 2024 edition of the Randwick Guineas will be held on Saturday 9th March.

Randwick Guineas time

The exact start time for the Randwick Guineas has yet to be announced, but is usually Race 8 on a bumper card, which will also include the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes.

The Randwick Guineas will be held at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, but that has not always been the case.

In 2011 and 2013 the Randwick Guineas was raced at Warwick Farm Racecourse.

Randwick Guineas history

The Randwick Guineas has a relatively short history, having been first raced in 2006, when a horse by the name of Hotel Grand took the honours.

Up until 2006, the Randwick Guineas had been known as the Canterbury Guineas, which was raced at Canterbury Park Racecourse.

The Randwick Guineas has grown in stature and now forms part of the Australian three-year-old ‘triple crown’ which also includes the Rosehill Guineas and Australian Derby.

There is a total prize pot of $1million for the Randwick Guineas, with the winner taking home $580,000.

Second wins $190,000 and third $98,000. Sixth, seventh and eighth all pick up $10,000 for their efforts, while ninth and tenth win $8000.

Randwick Guineas past winners

Communist won the 2023 edition of the Randwick Guineas for trainer Michael Freedman and jockey Zac Purton.

There have been some big winners of the Randwick Guineas throughout the years, none more so than the 2019 winner The Autumn Sun, who picked up six Group 1 wins.

It’s A Dundeel also achieved legendary status when completing the Sydney ‘triple crown’ of the Randwick Guineas, Rosehill Guineas and Australian Derby.
