Australian Racing: Raoul to rule the roost at Sunshine Coast

There are no fewer than eight meetings taking place on Sunday, including at Sunshine Coast., Nowra, Donald and Devonport.

Race 4 Sunshine Coast

Raoul @ 3.80

Race 6 Donald

Shearman Dyer @ 3.60

Race 7 Nowra

Nettles @ 7.00

Raoul to dazzle in the Sunshine

The fourth race at Sunshine Coast takes the eye, with the race in question a 1200m Class 3 contest set to take place on a good 4 track.

Ryan Wiggins is set to partner Sergeant Hulka in the race, with the gelding likely to have his supporters having shown improvement with racing this spell.

A down the field effort over this distance in a Class 2 event at Ipswich in June was followed by a good metro fifth in a Benchmark 65 contest at Doomben just under two weeks later.

The gelding was beaten less than two lengths on that occasion and showed up well on his first start at five when runner-up in a Class 2 at Rockhampton a month ago.

The son of Red Saga has been freshened by trained Garnett Taylor since that effort, however, RAOUL is preferred in this contest.

The six-year-old broke his maiden on a wet track over this distance at Coonabarabran last December and he has made just three subsequent starts.

The 3.80 selection had two barrier trials at Doomben prior to making his seasonal reappearance earlier this month.

That seasonal reappearance saw the gelding finish less than three-and-a-half-lengths behind the winner when third over 1200m in a Class 4 contest.

The switch to a sound surface appeared to be no issue that day with the geldings only previous experience of good going coming in barrier trials.

James Orman’s mount remains open to improvement and, with a good barrier draw, he is taken to deliver a victory here.

Dyer to return to winning ways

Donald hold a seven-race card, with the sixth race of the day a competitive looking 2200m Benchmark 58 handicap.

Carleen Hefel’s mount Laurie Blue appeared to appreciate the step up in distance when losing out narrowly in a 2050m maiden on a wet track at Moe on her penultimate start.

The four-year-old confirmed that was the case when saluting by eight lengths upped to this distance when racing on the synthetic track at Pakenham subsequently.

While the filly looks likely to be competitive in this contest, she is expected to find the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace representative SHEARMAN DYER hard to beat.

The selection showed good form in his last spell, including when saluting by three lengths in a 1980m maiden event on heavy going at Tatura in June.

The 3.60 gelding followed that effort up with a close second when racing at this Benchmark 58 level over this distance on the synthetic surface at Pakenham the following month.

While the son of Teofilo failed to shine over 2400m last time out, it’s notable that that effort came when racing at Benchmark 64 level in a metro contest at Sandown Hillside.

The drop in grade here is in the pick's favour and he is taken to double his career tally with John Allen booked to ride.

Nettles likely to break maiden

The most valuable race on the Nowra card is the concluding 1100m maiden plate.

NETTLES is the selection to deliver a victory at the third attempt for the Annabel Neasham stable.

The daughter of Overshare has shown ability in both previous starts, including when debuting with a fourth when beaten less than two lengths over 900m at Newcastle in February.

The 7.00 pick was spelled following that effort and came home one place better when beaten just over two lengths in a maiden over this trip at Mudgee earlier this month.

While the filly tackles a larger field here, she has more experience than most in this contest and looks capable of putting that to good use from barrier three.
