Australian Racing: Rhapsody ready to sing at Ballarat

There are two just meetings set to take place on Monday, with Ballarat's nine-race card taking place along with an eight-race offering from Newcastle.

Race 5 Newcastle

Ice Kat @ 9.00

Race 2 Ballarat

Comb Over Con @ 3.00

Race 7 Ballarat

Cosmic Rhapsody @ 4.80

Kat expected to break maiden

The fifth race on the Newcastle card is an interesting maiden handicap over 1150m.

The going is expected to be a soft 5 with ICE KAT the selection to break his maiden at the second time of asking.

Trained by Gary Portelli the gelding showed improvement with racing during his barrier trials at Warwick Farm.

The son of Maurice registered three of those, with his best result coming when beaten just over one-and-a-half-lengths into third over 795m on a good 4 track May 26th.

The 9.00 selection performed well when debuting over 1200m in a maiden event at Goulburn subsequently.

Tackling a good 4 track on that occasion he kept on at the one pace having raced prominently in an eight runner event.

Improvement is expected here and, with the shorter distance unlikely to inconvenience, he is taken to break his maiden at the second time of asking.

No Con for Dabernig charge

Russian Summer is expected to have his supporters ahead of the second race at Ballarat.

The race concerned is a 1200m maiden plate with the gelding have delivered his best effort to date when runner-up in a maiden over 1218m on a soft 6 at Geelong earlier this month.

The three-year-old finished strongly having been ridden with restraint on that occasion and should have no issues switched to the synthetic track here.

However, COMB OVER CON is preferred on this occasion with the gelding having placed second here on his two most recent starts.

Both of those outings have come over this distance including when beaten just under a length on June 5th.

While that form hasn’t been truly tested, it’s worth taking into account that the third home from his start here last month has won since, while the fourth has registered a placed effort.

Trained by Tom Dabernig the gelding did well from a wide barrier last time out and has a better gate here given he will jump from barrier two.

Jarrod Fry has ridden the 3.00 pick before when the pair finished sixth on a heavy 10 track at Warrnambool early last month and he is taken to steer Comb Over Con to a maiden triumph.

Cosmic ready to star for Cunningham

The seventh race on the Ballarat card is a 1200m Benchmark 58 event.

Thalursian looks likely to attract support down in grade following a down the field finish in a metro contest at Warwick Farm in April.

Freshened since that effort that came in a Benchmark 64 event over 1100m the gelding had finished fourth over 1000m at Kembla Grange on his return to action prior.

Jarrod Fry’s mount has an inside alley for this event and, while that is a positive, he is expected to find COSMIC RHAPSODY too strong.

Trained by Melody Cunningham the gelding has shown good form at this venue in the past, including when returning with a close second over 1100m when racing at this level earlier this month.

That effort marked the gelding's first start since a fifth over 1200m on turf at Wodonga in February, while the 4.80 pick has shown a liking for this track in the past including when winning here in August 2021.

That success came over 1000m in a Benchmark 58 event, but the 1200m distance here is no issue and he looks up to saluting from a wide alley.
