A-League: Roar need Mariners response

Brisbane Roar will be keen to return to winning ways when they take on the improving Central Coast Mariners on Thursday night.

Roar have got the season off to a flyer, but suffered a surprise defeat when going down 2-1 against Western United last weekend.

It is important they bounce back against the Mariners and they can still be backed at 9.00 to win the minor premiership.

The Mariners are starting to get their act together after a slow start and will be out to extend their unbeaten streak to five games.

Let’s take a look at the match-up as the opening game of Matchday 9 fast approaches.

Roar look to bounce back

Brisbane suffered just their second defeat of the season when losing to struggling Western United and they will be desperate to bounce back.

Another three points looked to be on the cards thanks to a goal from Jay O’Shea, but Western struck late to snatch the points.

Being back at Suncorp will be the tonic they need as they remain undefeated on home soil this season, winning two and drawing one.

They do not have the greatest record against the Mariners though and have lost four of the last six against them, two of which were at home.

However Roar are a different side this season under the leadership of Ross Aloisi and those previous results are consigned to the past.

Games between the two sides are usually high scoring, and over 2.5 goals in Thursday night’s clash can be backed at 1.53.

O’Shea also knows where the back of the net is and is a good price at 3.75 to score again at anytime.

Mariners on a roll

The Mariners are starting to find some form after an off-season of upheaval that saw their coach and key players move on.

They are now unbeaten in the last four games, winning two of them. It would have been three had they not conceded late in a 3-3 thriller against Melbourne City at the weekend.

Leaking goals has been an issue. That is now 15 for the season and they will need to tighten up if they are to make progress,

The one huge positive out of that game was Angel Torres firing home a hat-trick to take his tally for the season to four goals.

Torres should now be full of confidence and can be backed at 9.00 to grab the first goal of the game.

Neither side has an issue scoring goals either and both teams to register on Thursday night is priced at 1.44.

The Mariners are just three points away from the top six and can be backed at 2.37 to finish in the finals spots come the end of the season.
