Rocky on the road for Coolgardie Cup

The feature Coolgardie Cup will see a field of eight tackle the 1760m trip, with a good 4 track expected at the Western Australia venue.

Top weight Crescent City is sure to have his fans with William Pike, on board for the gelding’s last three starts, again in the saddle here.

Trained by Grant & Alana Williams the six-year-old has been going well at Belmont Park in recent months, placing on five of his seven starts since winning at the track in June.

That June effort saw the gelding register a victory in a 1400m Benchmark 72+ handicap and, while he has run well over further in the past, his best form has come at around 1600m.

With that in mind he is opposable here, with the in-form mare ROCKY PATH the pick racing off a low weight.

Trained by Brian Allen the seven-year-old will be familiar to locals as the winner of two of her last three starts, with all three of those coming at this venue.

The most recent of those efforts saw the mare win by nearly half a length in the Goldfields Tattersalls Gold Cup over 1600m here on August 27th.

The 7.50 daughter of Therock has underfoot conditions in her favour here and jockey Kirsty Bennett, on board for three of the pick's last four starts, in the saddle.

Barrier five is a good alley for the mare and, while she has yet to race over this distance, the way she shapes suggests the trip will be no issue racing off a low weight.

Bear to strike in Gold Cup

The Dubbo Gold Cup is expected to see Amor Victorious, the least experienced runner in the field, jump as favourite for the Bjorn Baker stable.

The gelding has had just the seven starts heading into the 1600m handicap, which is due to take place on a good 4 track.

However, the son of Caravaggio has won three of those seven outings, including his two most recent starts.

Both of those came at metro level, including when odds-on in taking out a 1550m Benchmark 72 handicap on a soft 5 track at Randwick Kensington on August 23rd.

Prior to that the gelding had saluted at Rosehill and, while he remains open to improvement, barrier 14 isn’t ideal in such a large field.

The ex-Irish campaigner CHICAGO BEAR knows what it takes to win in large fields, having taken out a 26-runner handicap in Ireland back in May 2021.

Now in the care of Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young, the 6.00 pick is another to have been racing at metro level in recent starts.

The six-year-old’s most recent outing saw him deliver his first victory since switching hemispheres when saluting by one-and-a-half-lengths at Morphettville July 29th.

That success came over 1600m, with the gelding finishing strongly from off the pace that day.

While Aaron Bullock’s mount has been racing on wet tracks of late, he proved he handles the good going forecast here at Flemington in November and he is taken to complete a double.

Invinovich to double up

The Natalie McCall-trained INVINOVICH has been in good form at this venue of late, including when third in a similar race to this on a good 4 track on his penultimate start.

The four-year-old was beaten just under three-and-a-half-lengths on that occasion, but duly registered his second career win when taking out a similar event August 27th.

That latest victory came on a good 4 track, with both of the 3.40 pick’s wins having come over this track and trip.

The forecast going is in James Orman’s mount's favour and, with a good barrier two off the rail, he looks up to completing a double.
