This competition was formerly known as the Tri Nations and was played between Australia, New Zealand and South Africa before the introduction of Argentina in 2012.

From its past in the Tri Nations to its current format, the Rugby Championship has developed into one of the most exciting international competitions in sport.
After winning the title four years straight between 2020 and 2023, South Africa broke New Zealand’s dominance in the competition by claiming the title in 2024.
The All Blacks are still the most successful team in this tournament in its different formats since 1996, winning 20 titles.
South Africa are second with five titles, Australia have four and Argentina are still searching for their maiden Rugby Championship crown.
After their impressive campaign in 2024, South Africa will be the team to beat going into the 2025 Rugby Championship campaign.
The Boks will face a sterner test to retain their title in 2025 due to the fact both of their games against the All Blacks will be played in New Zealand.
Australia will go into this tournament on the back of a three-Test series with the British & Irish Lions, so they should be battle-hardened ahead of some big challenges to come.
The Wallabies finished bottom of the table in 2003 and 2024, so they will be determined to have shown some progress come the end of the 2025 Rugby Championship under head coach Joe Schmidt.
As for Argentina, they managed to beat all the other nations in this competition and even had an outside shot at the title going into the final weekend.
If the Pumas can put together back-to-back wins and show a little more consistency, they will be a dangerous prospect in 2025.
