England v Australia: Autumn Nations Series preview

Australia will have been interested spectators when England played New Zealand last weekend and now the Wallabies will be hoping to also get one over on the Red Roses in the early hours of Sunday morning.

England let a famous win over the All Blacks slip through their fingers, as Steve Borthwick’s side squandered late scoring opportunities before losing 24-22.

Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt and the squad will have been paying close attention to the game last week and now get their own crack at the English on Sunday.

One narrow victory in Argentina was the only win Australia supporters had to cheer about at this year’s Rugby Championship, as Schmidt’s side lost the other five games to finish with the wooden spoon.

Conceding an average of 35.5 points per game in this year’s Rugby Championship, the Wallabies will know their defence must improve if they are to leave British or Irish shoes with positive results this month.

Australia will have seen how England fronted up in the pack against New Zealand and would have pulled off a famous win if fly-half George Ford had more luck from the boot.

While the Rugby Championship campaign was far from a success for Australia this year, at least this squad should be battle-hardened ahead of some big Test matches in Europe.

This Wallabies squad has spent a lot of time together over the past few months and that should stand them in good stead ahead of this mouthwatering clash against England this weekend.

England need consistency

While last weekend was an example of England letting a big win slip through their fingers, this week they will be looking to prove they are capable of backing up a big performance with another.

Consistency has been an issue for England, as they showed in the Six Nations when they lost one weekend against Scotland at Murrayfield, before beating the mighty Ireland the following game at Twickenham.

England are firm favourites on home soil to add to Australia’s woes and anything less than a win on Sunday will take away many of the positives the Red Roses garnered from that performance against the All Blacks.
