Reds v Waratahs: Super Rugby Saturday Preview

The Waratahs' rise has been one of the big stories in the early weeks of the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season and their development will be under the microscope once again on Saturday as they take on the Reds at Suncorp Stadium.

Winning all of their opening three games against the Highlanders, Fijian Drua and Western Force, the Tahs have already surpassed the two victories they secured in their 2024 regular season.

While the fixture list might have been somewhat kind in the first few weeks, there is little doubt the Sydney outfit are moving in the right direction under head coach Dan McKeller.

Saturday’s trip to Suncorp offers up their biggest challenge of the season so far and a chance for the Waratahs to see how they rank against one of their Aussie rivals.

Waratahs ready for acid test

Coming up against one of the stronger Aussie teams, Saturday will provide a great opportunity for McKeller’s side to see how they match up against one of their rivals.

The Waratahs have lost six of their last seven Super Rugby Pacific game against the Reds and they will know a victory at Suncorp Stadium won’t come easily.

New arrival Joseph Sua'ali'i remains on the sidelines but the good news for Tahs fans is that the Wallabies star is believed to be nearing a return from his toe injury.

Saturday’s game in Brisbane will come too soon for Sua'ali'i but his teammates are 2.87 to pull off a victory at Suncorp Stadium without him.

Reds seek response

The Reds started the season positively with wins over Moana Pasifika and the Force but they hit a brick wall last time out in the form of the Crusaders.

It was a clinical performance from the Crusaders who had less clean breaks and beat fewer defenders but still managed to win 43-19 in Christchurch.

The Reds head coach Les Kiss will know his side will need to be better in their defence if they are to end the Waratahs' winning run, something the hosts are 1.44 favourites to achieve this weekend.
