Wales v Australia: Autumn Nations Series preview

Having pulled off a thrilling 42-37 victory over England at Allianz Stadium last week, Joe Schmidt’s Australia head across the border to Cardiff to take on Wales on Monday.

Wales suffered a 24-19 defeat against Fiji last time out at the Principality Stadium to record their 10th consecutive international loss.

Warren Gatland has a huge task ahead of him if he is to turn the ship around with the Welsh national side and the Wallabies will be hoping to add to Welsh woes on Monday.

Inspired performance something to build on

On the back of a hugely disappointing 2024 Rugby Championship campaign, Australia understandably found themselves as 5.00 underdogs in the results market to come away from London with a victory over England in the Autumn Nations Series.

For a second week in a row, on the back of a 24-22 defeat at the hands of New Zealand, England failed to manage a Test match in the latter stages and Australia fought until the last play to earn a memorable win against their rivals.

While defensive issues still plague this Australia side, with 37 points still too many to give up to win most Test matches, the Wallabies found a way with ball in hand to get the morale-boosting win in London.

It’s a performance for Schmidt and his players to build on, as they prepare to face a Wales side that have also had their own defensive issues over the last year.

Australia head into this game as the favourites, while they are 1.90 with -5 in the line market.

Fiji expose more Welsh weakness

Leading at the break and seeing a Fijian shown a red card in the first-half, it looked likes Wales were set to end their miserable run of results against the Pacific Islanders.

However, Fiji kept themselves in the contest and in the end their dynamic rugby won the day in Cardiff.

Now Wales face an even tough challenge against the Wallabies, while they will also be without starting scrum-half Tomos Williams and centre Mason Grady due to injury.

Having not won since beating Georgia at the last World Cup in October 2023, it’s been miserable spell for Wales and things might well get worse before they get better.
