Rugby Union: Wallabies preparing for Twickenham test

On the back of finishing bottom of the Rugby Championship ladder this year, Australia will kick-start their European tour on 10th November when they take on England at the newly-named Allianz Stadium.

Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt will be paying close attention to this weekend’s action, as England kick-off their Autumn Nations Series with New Zealand coming to London.

The Red Rose are 2.37 to make a winning start to November, while the All Blacks are 1.61 favourites to leave Allianz Stadium with the victory.

Schmidt and the Australia squad will be interested spectators, as they look for any weaknesses in the English ranks they can look to exploit in their highly-anticipated clash next Sunday.

Wallabies must pick themselves up

One narrow victory in Argentina was the only thing Wallabies supporters had to cheer about, as Schmidt’s side lost the other five Rugby Championship games to finish with the wooden spoon this year.

Australia now face a formidable tour of the northern hemisphere, with big Test matches to be played at Allianz Arena (Twickenham), the Principality, Murrayfield and the Aviva Stadium.

Tightening up the defence will be key for the Wallabies if they are to head back Down Under with anything to show for their efforts.

Conceding an average of 35.5 points per game in this year’s Rugby Championship, if Schmidt’s side can bring that number down over the coming weeks, it’s hard to see them coming away from London, Cardiff, Edinburgh or Dublin with a positive result.

Whenever playing England, the foundation has to be in the forwards with positive performances at the breakdown and the set-piece.

With former England lock Steve Borthwick at the helm, the Red Rose look to use their world-class operators in the pack.

Australia must front up and the forwards if they are to improve on their recent record against old rivals England, which has seen the Wallabies win just one of their last 11 encounters.

England could be rusty

With the Premiership season just getting underway in England, Australia will be hoping Borthwick’s side are a little rusty when they meet in London next weekend.

Of course, England’s clash against New Zealand will be an opportunity to work on combinations but it is still very early days in the new season for players based in the northern hemisphere.

While the 2024 Rugby Championship was far from a success for the Wallabies, at least this group should be battle-hardened against some of the best teams in the world.

This Australia squad has spent plenty of time together in recent months and that should stand them in good stead ahead of a mammoth opening game of their European tour in London.
