Aussie Rules: Saints and Power clash at Marvel

St Kilda will be out to consolidate top spot on the AFL ladder when they take on Port Adelaide at Marvel Stadium on Friday night.

Six rounds into the new season and St Kilda are looking the real deal with five wins, but they face another tough test against a Power side that sit in seventh with four wins.

St Kilda are joint top with Collingwood, who face a tough assignment away at Adelaide in the last game of the round.

It presents the ideal opportunity for Saints to start the round with a win and put the pressure on the Pies ahead of their clash at the Adelaide Oval.

We look all set for another exciting round of AFL action with some big games to come. The clash between the Saints and Power is a great place to start so let’s take a close look at the match-up with game day fast approaching.

St Kilda suffered their first defeat of the season when losing to Collingwood in week five, but they produced the perfect response by seeing off Carlton the week after.

All eyes would have been on Ross Lyon’s side to see if the bubble had burst, but they gave the perfect answer with a 12-point win over the Blues.

St Kilda have the longest premiership drought in the competition, but the members are starting to believe this could be their year.

Or at the very least they look set to be there or thereabouts come the end of the season. The likes of Melbourne and Collingwood are still the hot fancies at 5.00 but St Kilda cannot be dismissed and are available at 14.00 to win the Grand Final.

If they keep ticking off the wins, with Port Adelaide next up, then the doubters may be turned. St Kilda have won four games at Marvel so far this season and Port Adelaide will need to be at their best to be in with a chance.

Power surge on

But Ken Hinkley’s side have already shown they have what it takes to grind out a big win on the road when beating Sydney by two points at the MCG in week four.

They have since followed that up with wins over Western Bulldogs and West Coast Eagles so will be full of confidence heading into the game.

St Kilda coach Ross Lyon says he is expecting a ‘fierce battle’ but is backing his players to be up to the job when the pressure is on.

The Saints started well last season before fading and dropping out of the top eight altogether, but this season there is a different vibe under the leadership of Lyon.

Lyon hopes to have star forward Max King back in the mix sooner rather than later as he recovers from a shoulder reconstruction, while Jack Billings could return this weekend.

Billings has been impressing in the VFL after recovering from a broken leg and would be a welcome addition to the St Kilda side.

Port missing skipper

Port Adelaide are going well but their list will be tested against St Kilda as Hinkley will be forced into three changes.

They will be without skipper Tom Jonas who has landed a one-match suspension for a late hit in the West Coast win, while Todd Marshall is out with concussion.

Kane Farrell is out with a jaw injury but there is some good news for them as Charlie Dixon is set to return following a knee injury.
