Australian Racing: Samedi can enjoy Friday joy

There’s plenty of action for punters to get stuck into on Friday including metro meetings from Moonee Valley, Canterbury, Doomben and Devonport.

Race 5 Moonee Valley

Samedi @ 8.00

Race 7 Canterbury

Jumeirah Beach @ 6.00

Race 6 Doomben

Sacred Mission @ 4.00

Samedi to triumph at Valley

The fifth race at Moonee Valley is set to take place over the Cox Plate course and distance, with a field of 13 due to go to post for the Benchmark 70 handicap.

Staunch will jump from next to the rail for the Matt Laurie team and he is expected to have his supporters with Carleen Hefel taking one-and-a-half-kilograms off his back.

The five-year-old recorded his best effort this year when losing out by a narrow margin in a 1600m Benchmark 70 handicap held on a soft 5 track here two weeks ago.

The step up in distance isn’t certain to suit here however and with that in mind SAMEDI is preferred here.

The son of Rebel Raider registered a near one-and-a-half-length success in a Benchmark 64 handicap on a soft 5 surface at Geelong three starts back.

The selection’s best effort since then came when losing out by a narrow margin in the bet365 Mortlake Cup over 2000m at Mortlake on 4th November.

Trainer Charlotte Littlefield has sent out three winners from her eight starters in the last 30 days and her representative here is selected to add to those with Brad Rawiller up for the first time.

Beach for Canterbury success

The penultimate race on the Canterbury card is the most valuable contest of the day with the 1550m Benchmark 78 handicap worth $80,000.

A good 4 track is expected here with Money From The Sky set to jump as favourite for the 12-runner event.

The five-year-old was a winner over 1500m on a heavy 9 track at Rosehill at the end of April and he ended last season with a fifth over this course and distance in a Benchmark 72 handicap in June.

The gelding delivered a couple of solid efforts in barrier trials prior to resuming with a victory in a similar contest over this track and trip on a good 4 surface on 17th November.

Trainer Sara Ryan has been in great form of late with the handler boasting a 33% strike-rate (5/15) in the last 30 days.

However, her representative is expected to find JUMEIRAH BEACH too strong in this contest.

The selection was hampered at the start prior to finishing fourth of six in the race won by Money From The Sky at this venue last month.

Crucially the pick receives an extra two kilograms in weight ahead of this contest and has the services of in form hoop Tommy Berry for this event.

While a wide barrier isn’t ideal for Richard & Will Freedman’s representative, he has shown good form this spell and should prove capable of getting across to race prominently.

Mission for Doomben glory

The sixth race on the Doomben card is an interesting 1640m Class 2 handicap expected to take place on a soft 5 track.

SACRED MISSION delivered his second career win on a heavy 10 track at Ipswich back in May and he is taken to register his first win since by taking this contest.

The selection raced over 2200m when making all the running on that occasion and, while he suffered a heavy defeat at Eagle Farm subsequently, that did come in the Group 1 Queensland Derby.

The gelding appeared to find the trip in addition to the class of race too much that day and he returned to form when runner-up over 1350m in a Class 2 handicap at Ipswich first up this spell.

The step up to this trip is no issue here and, with a good alley five from the rail, he looks up to going one better in this contest.
