Saturday A-League preview: Melbourne City to power on

There are three Australia A-League matches taking place on Saturday, including Western United FC's daunting trip to table-toppers Melbourne City.

Along with that clash at AAMI Park, there are two more massive games taking place with Sydney FC hosting Wellington Phoenix and Adelaide United travelling to Central Coast Mariners.

Melbourne head into Saturday's contest with a four-point lead at the summit and two games in hand on second-place Western Sydney Wanderers, who suffered a shock 1-0 loss to rock-bottom Perth Glory on Friday.

City picked up a 3-1 victory at Wellington Phoenix last time out, making it four wins from their last five league outings, while they haven't tasted defeat in the A-League in their last four home assignments.

Western United FC find themselves 10th in the standings, just a point off the bottom, but they have managed to pick up seven points from the last nine on offer.

However, John Aloisi's troops have struggled on their travels, losing three of their four away league matches this season, and it is hard to see them coming away with a positive result from AAMI Park.

Melbourne's Jamie Maclaren has scored 12 goals in the league - six more than his nearest challenger - and it is 2/1 for the striker to net first and City to triumph in the Wincast market.

Third takes on fourth in a massive A-League game at Industree Group Stadium on Saturday, as the Central Coast Mariners take on Adelaide United.

The Mariners are one place and a point ahead of their opponents and hosts are in good form heading into the contest, having won three of their last four games and also racking up three straight victories in their own backyard.

Adelaide snapped a three-match winless run with a 2-0 win over Perth Glory last time out and they will be hoping to keep the momentum going from that comfortable victory.

It looks a tough one to pick out a winner in this clash, as there is little to separate the pair, therefore it may prove prudent to look into the Total Goals/Both Team to Score market and back Over 2.5 & Yes at 4/5.

This bet has landed in seven of the Mariners' 10 league outings this term, while it has come off in exactly half of Adelaide's 10 assignments.

Phoenix to swoop in for positive result

OddsSydney FC 10/11, Draw 14/5, Wellington Phoenix 14/5

Just two places and two points separate the duo preparing to face off at Allianz Stadium on Saturday, as seventh-place Sydney FC take on Wellington Phoenix.

Sydney picked up a 2-0 win at Newcastle Jets last time out, ending a two-game losing streak, but they have only won one of their last seven home A-League matches.

That record should give hope that the Phoenix can come away with a positive result and they look worth backing in the Double Chance market - Draw or Wellington - at 5/6.

Ufuk Talay's side were on a three-game unbeaten run before they ran into table-toppers Melbourne City last time out, but they didn't disgrace themselves in that 3-1 loss and there were positives to take from defeat.

While it is hard to back Wellington with the utmost confident to get the win, giving yourself some protection with the double chance is the smart play, especially given the fact only one team has drawn more times than the Phoenix's five in the league this season.

There is also the chance both sides could find the back of the net in this one, as they have both conceded 18 times from 10 league outings, and the 4/7 for Both Teams to Score is appealing.
