Australian Racing: Shut It Down can win Barcaldine battle

There are four meetings set to take place on Tuesday including at Newcastle and Murwillumbah in New South Wales.

Race 4 Newcastle

Smokin’ Crazy @ 3.00

Race 5 Murwillumbah

Prophets De'vine @ 2.40

Race 2 Barcaldine

Shut It Down @ 3.80

Smokin' Crazy to salute at Newcastle

The fourth race on the Newcastle card is an interesting 1300m Class 1 handicap contest.

The going is expected to be a soft 5 with Just Gisella likely to have her supporters for the Michael Freedman stable.

The three-year-old is lightly-raced with just three starts to her name, however they include a winning debut effort when registering a length victory over 1100m at Hawkesbury in August.

That Hawkesbury success marked the filly’s only previous start on a wet track, with a last of seven on a good 4 being followed up with a two-length third over 1200m at this venue.

While Keegan Latham’s mount has a good barrier here, it can prove profitable to look to the top of the weights for the winner with SMOKIN’ CRAZY the pick here.

Trained by Paul Messara & Leah Gavranich, the daughter of Snitzel has shown good form in her three starts to date.

The first two of those came at this venue, with the selection following up a fourth over 900m here on debut with a narrow victory in a 1200m maiden back here in April.

Both of those course efforts came on a soft 6 track and the filly appeared to have no issues with quicker going when two-and-a-half-lengths second over 1300m at Scone subsequently.

The selection has a good barrier here and looks capable of providing jockey Aaron Bullock with a winner.

Prophets for victory

Annabel Neasham boasts a 40% strike-rate (2/5) with her runners at Murwillumbah in the last 12 months and she saddles two on the card.

PROPHETS DE’VINE is one of those with the filly set to take in the fifth race of the day, a 2020m Class 1 set weights contest.

A good 4 track is expected for the race, with the selection having shown a liking for a sound surface in the past, including when delivering a victory at Gatton on her penultimate start.

The four-year-old drew nearly two-and-a-half-lengths clear of her nine rivals in a 1600m maiden held on a good 4 track on that day.

The step up in distance here looks likely to suit, with the daughter of Divine Prophet having narrowly lost out when finishing well over 1720m at Grafton on 26th September.

Damien Thornton's mount has a wide barrier to overcome but should be able to do just that to record her second career success.

Down for success

SHUT IT DOWN has shown good form so far this spell including when winning two of his last four starts and he looks capable of delivering a victory in the second race at Barcaldine.

The race in question is a competitive looking Benchmark 60 handicap set to take place over 1600m.

The pick's most recent victory saw him triumph by nearly two lengths in an 1800m contest held on a good 3 surface at Jundah.

The gelding appeared to appreciate the return of the blinkers, worn for the first time since a second at Longreach in August on that occasion and they are retained here.

The shorter distance here holds no issues for the son of Lonhro, having delivered a victory over 1400m at Aramac in August.

The selection will jump from next to the rail here and he is taken to complete a double.
