Australian Racing: Skybird goes for Guineas glory

It's Thousand Guineas day at Caulfield on Saturday, with the feature race for three-year-old fillies one of two Group 1 contests set to take place on a ten-race card.

Race 7 Caulfield

Skybird @ 4.00

Race 8 Caulfield

I Am Me @ 8.50

Race 7 Newcastle

Invincible Spy @ 4.80

Bird to fly home in Guineas

The big race of the day is set to take place as the seventh at Caulfield, with a field of 13 declared for the 1600m contest set to take place on a good 4 track.

The Michael Moroney-trained Coeur Volante is expected to prove popular with punters, having gone unbeaten in three starts since suffering a defeat on debut at Sandown Hillside in May.

The fillies’ two victories this spell have both come in Group company including when taking out the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude over 1400m here just under a month ago.

The daughter of Proisir had two of her rivals here in the shape of Vivy Air and Zourion back in second and third with the first named delivering a strong finish having raced from off the pace.

While Coeur Volante should stay this 1600m distance, the unbeaten SKYBIRD is preferred in this contest.

Trained by Mitchell Freedman, the 4.00 filly debuted with a near two-length success in a 1200m maiden at Ballarat in September.

Slowly away on that occasion, she has had no such issues since but has been ridden from off the pace on each occasion.

Beau Mertens, set to ride here, has been on board for all three previous starts, with the most recent coming when taking out the 3 Point Motors Fillies Classic, a Group 2 event at Moonee Valley.

Successful by a narrow margin having finished strongly on a good 4 track that day she looks capable of defending her unbeaten record to register her first win at the highest level.

I Am Me has what it takes

The second of the two Group 1 events at Caulfield is the 1400m Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.

Magic Time has shown up well for trainer Grahame Begg in recent times and is likely to start favourite here.

The gelding registered a one-and-a-half-length Group 3 success in The Nivison over 1200m at Rosehill on his second start this spell.

That effort preceded a third-place finish in The Invitation over this trip at Randwick October 28th.

While the filly raced against her own sex that day, she has to tackle her male rivals here and I AM ME is the selection here for the powerful Ciaron Maher & David Eustace team.

The pick has raced over this trip just once, finishing down the field in a contest at Randwick when racing on a soft 6 track in October 2021.

The 8.50 five-year-old mare has shown good form in open company sprints in recent times including when taking out the 1200m Group 3 Sydney Stakes at Randwick last month.

That victory was followed with a good second behind the world’s top sprinter Imperatriz in a small field renewal of the Group 1 Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley.

Blake Shinn’s mount shapes as if she is worth another try at this trip and she is taken to deliver a victory.

Spy tipped to stay unbeaten

There’s Group 3 action at Newcastle with the 3yo Spring Stakes over 1600m set to take place as the seventh race of the day.

INVINCIBLE SPY has shown good form from the front in going unbeaten in two starts to date and is the pick to register a victory when stepping up in grade for the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott team.

The 4.80 pick debuted with a victory over 1400m at this track just over a month ago and duly followed up when stepped up to this distance for a Class 1 at Gosford at the start of this month.

While the son of I Am Invincible steps up in grade here, he looks capable of successfully doing so and maintain his unbeaten record on his first start on a wet track.
