Auckland FC get the chance to open up a massive 11-point lead on Adelaide United when the two sides clash in the A-League on Saturday afternoon.

The New Zealanders continue to shine in their debut A-League campaign and are marching towards the minor premiership.

They have an eight-point lead over the second-placed Reds heading into this fixture and can take another step closer to silverware with a win.

For Adelaide it is a game they simply have to win to keep alive any hopes they have of catching Steve Corica’s side.

Unfortunately for the Reds they have hit a bad patch of form at just the wrong time, losing three of the last four games.

Auckland’s impressive season so far been built on a solid defence, but now the goals are starting to fly in at the other end as well.

They recorded their biggest win of the season last weekend when smashing Wellington Phoenix 6-1 in the derby clash.

If there were any doubts about whether Auckland have what it takes to win silverware this season, they were blown away with that win.

Logan Robertson was a hat-trick hero, while Neyder Moreno also chipped in with a brace, before Jesse Randall completed the rout in stoppage time.

Auckland now have 32 goals for the season and have conceded just 13, so it is no surprise that they are streets ahead of the rest.

Now the only danger is the players getting ahead of themselves, but Corica has enough experience to make sure they keep their feet on the ground.

Auckland have lost just one game on home soil all season and have won four on the bounce since the 2-2 draw with Adelaide.

Visitors are on the slide

Adelaide looked set to push Auckland all the way just a few weeks ago, but three defeats in four matches have hit them hard.

Now they need to regroup and come out fighting, or they could end up missing out on second place, never mind top spot.

Conceding goals has been an issue, with Sydney FC putting four past them, while Western United beat them 3-0 last weekend.

Newcastle Jets also managed a 2-1 win and the Reds need to stop conceding so many goals if they are to give themselves a chance.

Their only recent win was a 1-0 victory against Melbourne City, when top scorer Archie Goodwin grabbed the only goal of the game.

Goodwin has been one highlight for the Reds this season and he also scored both goals in the 2-2 draw against Auckland.
