Liverpool v Manchester United: Premier League Monday Preview

The first Premier League weekend of 2025 is approaching and the standout fixture takes place at Anfield in the early hours of Monday, when Liverpool take on deadly rivals Manchester United.

But, while the Reds are pulling away at the top of the table, United are just seven points above the relegation zone and it is hard to recall such disparity between the two clubs ahead of a league meeting.

Liverpool concluded 2024 with a 5-0 mauling of West Ham, while United endured another setback against Newcastle United, losing 2-0 at Old Trafford.

Reds expected to romp to victory

It would be a bold move to suggest the result of this match will be anything but a Liverpool win, which is appropriately priced at 1.28.

Arne Slot has done a terrific job since replacing Jurgen Klopp in the summer, guiding the Merseysiders to 14 wins from their opening 18 matches in the Premier League.

They won their last four matches of 2024 by an aggregate scoreline of 16-5 and are unbeaten in 23 matches, last losing when they faced Nottingham Forest back in September.

Mohamed Salah is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career with 17 goals and 13 assists from his 18 league appearances, while the Reds have been tight at the other end of the pitch as well.

They denied the Hammers a single shot on target at the London Stadium last time out and have conceded only 17 goals in the English top-flight this season.

Amorim has enormous job on his hands

While Liverpool continue to flourish, the Red Devils have slipped further down the Premier League standings.

It was never going to be a quick fix appointing Ruben Amorim to replace Erik ten Hag, but even the former Sporting Lisbon boss is likely to be surprised by how bad things have been.

December was not without its positives - United hammered Everton 4-0 at the start of the month and came from behind to win the Manchester derby 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

But they finished last year with three consecutive league defeats without scoring - against Bournemouth, Wolves and Newcastle.

Those results nudged United down to 14th spot heading into the New Year and Amorim will surely dip into the transfer market to start an overhaul of the squad, which is in disarray at the moment.

United are unsurprisingly as big as 8.50 to win this match, while even the draw is priced at 6.25, although it is worth remembering that both league meetings of these two teams last season ended in draws.
