Melbourne City’s back-to-back draws with Western Sydney Wanderers and Adelaide United saw the title race to the top brought to a premature end with a round to spare.

However, Saturday’s game is no formality, with both City and Sydney in desperate need of a victory in a high-stakes showdown at AAMI Park.

City have destiny in their hands

Looking to secure a top-two finish, City do have their destiny in their own hands but they have rivals hot on their heels going into an intriguing final round of games.

Western United and Western Sydney Wanderers are just behind City on the ladder and both will have ambitions of finishing in second place and securing a spot in the semi-finals.

City are on a six-game unbeaten run against Sydney FC and are understandably the 1.90 favourites to win on home soil this weekend.

A point will do it for Sydney

Failing to beat City since all the way back in December 2022, Sydney FC don’t have any fond recent memories of this fixture.

However, with sixth-place Adelaide already playing all of their games, Sydney know that a point will be enough to leapfrog the Reds into that last finals place.

A 1-0 defeat at Western United was a setback for the Sky Blues last time out but head coach Ufuk Talay and his side can make amends this weekend.

Losing all of their last six games away at Melbourne City, Sydney know they will have to perform under pressure to end that miserable run.
