Melbourne Victory v Western United: A-League Friday preview

Having been on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline against Melbourne City on Tuesday, Western United have more derby football on their plates on Friday evening when they face Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park.

After winning their previous four A-League games, there was plenty of anticipation on what Western United could do against City in a battle for points and bragging rights.

However, it was City who were the ones left smiling on Tuesday night, as goals from Harry Politidis and Benjamin Mazzeo saw Aurelio Vidmar’s side claim the three points to move up to second place on the A-League ladder.

As for Western United, they must dust themselves off quickly and be ready to go again against Melbourne Victory on Friday.

United looking to get back in saddle

Hoping to get back to winning ways at the first time of asking, head coach John Aloisi will be eager to put right what went wrong against City on Tuesday.

Friday should provide a good opportunity to get back in the saddle as United face a Victory side that have failed to win any of their last four A-League games.

Drawing with City, Auckland FC and Western Sydney Wanderers, along with a defeat to Sydney FC, it’s been a difficult run for head coach Arthur Diles and his side.

Victory eager to stop the rot

Despite what has been a difficult run of results for Victory, they still find themselves up in fourth place on the ladder.

However, if Victory are to keep challenging near the top end of the standings, they can’t afford to allow this winless run to continue for much longer.

Victory can look back on some positive results against Western United in recent meetings, with Victory unbeaten in their last three encounters with two wins and a draw in that time.

It was Victory who were the ones celebrating a 3-1 win over United earlier this season and Diles could certainly use a similar result on Friday night to get his side’s campaign back on track.
